Subject: Burning Flipside 2013 Tickets and Mass Gathering Permit
Dear Burning Flipside Community,
We have had a very positive series of meetings this year with the county officials serving our hosts, the people of Milam County. The county judge, sheriff, and others have reviewed our application for a Mass Gathering Permit and it was granted on May 2nd, 2013.
We have always said we were not going to seek a permit if it creates a "Flipside" in name only. Likewise, we would never seek a permit if, in so doing, we might actually threaten the "Burner" name in the state of Texas. We believe that our organization of volunteers has met all of those requirements. Our host county and the State of Texas agree.
The provisions of the statute otherwise requiring that a permitted event supply potable water, daily trash service, receptacles, cups, napkins, lighting, etc., were reviewed by the Texas Department of State Health Services against our permit application and those specific provisions are understood to be unnecessary with the acknowledgment that the spirit of the event works in kind with the spirit of the statute supporting public safety. To be sure, ours is the first event of its kind the state health worker has reviewed.
Most importantly, we believe the fundamental nature of Flipside is intact--nothing is changed this year over previous years. Please feel free to visit with the Combustion Chamber (you can just reply to this message), or stop by the Warehouse with questions.
As we've reported at Combustion Chamber meetings, the current permit request is documented for 2,800 folks. After three years without growing the event's size, we are allocating an additional 248 tickets, a 10% increase over last year. This number was decided in consultation with our volunteers, and it is what we consider the right level of growth our all-volunteer organization can sustain. These additional tickets will be Will-Call only.
The LLC has been handling the distribution of these tickets personally, just like other unsold tickets in the past, using the community organized notNotBobslist.org site. It is very likely tickets above the Mass Gathering number (2,499) will be handled the same way next year, as well.
Help us spread the tickets around; if you are pretty sure you can't attend, we ask that you please try to find your ticket a nice home.
We have made a commitment that ticket sales, and a Mass Gathering Permit, will be brought together into a normal ticketing process (likely including a deselection lottery) by Burning Flipside 2015. What this means is as long as volunteering, art, and participation are supported over the next few years, we would be able to open our ticket sales permit in hand.
Obviously, we will revisit this yearly. There is no guarantee that our all-volunteer event would support a permit application every year.
Thank you each for all that you are doing to make sure our growing family is a good family to grow with and a welcome family to join. Please continue to support each other and work to find new and better ways to keep our event and our amazing community a great place to call Home.
Burning Flipside and our community of friends and family are ours to lose, just as they are ours to protect.

Subject: Burning Flipside 2013 - Ticket Processing
Dear Burning Flipside Community,
We have been growing every year. This is visibly obvious in the community of volunteers gathered at church night, other burn events in the state, and our conversations in the social networks. Not surprisingly, this means there are many now hoping to attend our Burning Flipside event.
During our ticket processing this weekend, volunteers sorted and processed all of the ticket requests that had been delivered to us by the USPS.
After several years of practice with mailing ticket requests within the mail-in window with enclosed money orders, this year only 13 ticket requests were invalid because of mail-in date or other payment problems.
We received valid requests for 2,915 tickets. In order to maintain a population that our volunteer base can manage and still stay under the state-mandated 2,499 person limit, we had to return 286 ticket requests amounting to 511 tickets. The state-mandated limit is limiting our natural growth.
We have been in this situation several times over the years and used the already-made plans for our lottery process. To be clear, we have two exempted pools of ticket requests from our lottery this year.
In order to ensure that our volunteers can purchase their tickets and attend Flipside, we set aside a number of tickets which are exempted from the lottery. This pool of tickets includes those for the LLC, the Combustion Chamber, our Leads, our Area Facilitators, and many other volunteers necessary to have a successful event.
New for 2013, the unlucky ticket requests from the ticketing process from last year were exempted from the lottery making them lucky this year.
From the remaining tickets under the state-mandated limit, Adam, Beth, Izzi, Princess, Scott, and Thomas of AAR, LLC pulled, at random, the necessary amount of ticket requests from 8 separate bins, one at a time from each bin, until the numbers were met. This process was done openly, with a candid conversation about what was to happen, with many ticket team volunteers solemnly witnessing as the names of our friends and family were read aloud.
Within the next few days, the ticket team will be sending email notifications to everyone regarding the status of their ticket requests. Please do not contact the ticket team regarding your ticket request as they still have a lot of work to do, and having to answer many individual emails will delay their process in getting information to you. If all goes according to plan, everyone who mailed in a request will be notified by email of their ticket request status by Friday, Feb. 8th.
It surprises us still that there are always tickets available leading up to the event. Even so, the LLC is working again this year on securing a permit to allow more than the current state-mandated limit of 2,499 people. After last year's near-perfect event, Burning Flipside, all of you, should feel proud that now going into our 15th year, Flipside's success drives our permit concerns, and not the other way round.
Since our growth process is defined by our community, we're all in control of our individual tickets. Thus, community involvement is still one of the best ways to find a ticket.
1) VOLUNTEER! Generally people with extra tickets offer them to people who are active and contributing members of the community. Even if you have never been to an event, this is a great way to meet people and find out about a spare ticket.

2) Come to church night or camp fundraisers! There will be many people at these events who will either have tickets or be able to connect you with someone that has an extra.
3) We have seen the growth of the social networks and we know that tickets will be exchanged through them.
4) notNotBobslist.org a third-party, volunteer-run forum, created by our community and is unaffiliated with AAR, LLC is a place that has helped folks get Flipside tickets. Announcements about that ticket exchange should go out on the Austin-List mailing list in the near future.

Remember that as we share with Burning Flipside freely, don't encourage scalpers to take that gift from you. Please do not pay more than $95 for your Adult ticket, or $35 for a Kid ticket, and remember that there is no cost for a Child ticket. Feeding ticket scalpers attracts more ticket scalpers.
Thank you.

Subject: Announcing Your DaFT Lead for 2013!
Hey, Flipside!
We'd like to introduce you to your DaFT Lead for Burning Flipside 2013: The Bandersnatch Boobytrap! He's done this before with the Texas Tango so we know to expect great things! It's Kris Blahnik!
The effigy design and plan is, once again, like nothing we've seen before at Flipside. Somehow, our inspired DaFT Leads always manage to design something new and special no matter how many times we think "we've seen it all already." They continue to bring us the absolute best skill, art, and safety in design and fabrication.
We'd like to invite you to join us at Spring Town Hall on Saturday, February 9th as Kris introduces us all to "The Beast."
"The Beast" will take many hands to wrassle it, so please contribute your time and skills, or come learn some new ones, with the DaFT to help make this effigy go.
Special thanks goes to the DaFT Selection Committee--Chainsaw, Dotti, Jic, Monk, Beth, and Dave, with Krahnik in absentia as he proposed an art piece--who review and evaluate the designs!
