[edit] Introduction

So you want to be a Greeter? Awesome cause we want you!
Even if you've greetered a million times, please follow the steps below before signing up on the wiki.
Thank you for all you do!

Step 1: Read, cherish, and adore the Greeter Training Guide.

Step 2: Read and recite from memory the Greeter Cheat Sheet, which has all the questions a greeter will ask each participant.

Step 3: Sign up for a shift after completing steps 1 and 2.

Addendum: Contact the Greeter lead if you have questions or concerns.

[edit] Step 1: READ THE GREETER TRAINING GUIDE

Greeting is fun, but it's still work. Super fun work! Being a greeter is a wonderful way to volunteer! It gives you the opportunity to give back to the community and to be the first costumed freaky faces people see when they get to Flipside. People will recognize you for the rest of Flipside!

The all-powerful, all-knowing Greeter Cheat Sheet outlines all the questions that you’ll need to ask the people you're greeting. These sheets will be plastered everywhere at the Greeters Station on clipboards. This is your bible! Read it, love it, quote it, quiz everyone on it!

[edit] Things to Consider for Your Shift

Make the Greeter Station a Theme Camp. Think of the Greeter Station as Theme Camp #1 on the map. But this Theme Camp changes themes with each Greeter Shift! If your TC is covering a shift together, make your shift a part of your TC planning for this year. Brainstorm ideas together on how to greet in the spirit of your TC.

DJs make the shift more fun! Music is a major part of Flipside. There will be a PA system at the Station! Please take care of it! If you have a DJ in your camp, encourage them to bring their music to the Greeter Station for your shift. If the next shift wants the DJ to stay, and your DJ wants to stay, then it's all good. There will also be a CD player and a plug for mp3 players. Bring your iPod! Transportation for DJ equipment can *possibly* be handled by Parking volunteers with their Gators or the Greeter Lead, if given notice.

Bring drinks and snacks! You want to make sure that you have enough water to drink. It's been known to happen that greeters receive a lot of cold beers, but no cold water. You should bring snacks and cold water to your shift. Watch out for dehydration. There will be a cooler at the GS for your beverages. PISS CLEAR!!

Show up 15 minutes before your shift! After three hours of greeting, quizzing, drinking, and high-energy mayhem, people need to relax. And they are expecting to relax when their shift ends. Be kind to your fellow volunteers and show up for your shift 15 minutes early to get a pass-off from the previous shift. Look after each other, make sure you clean up after yourselves.

ALL SHIFTS are responsible for their trash! The Greeters station should be an example of Leave No Trace, not a gigantic fucktastrophy. Put your trash in the bags provided and haul it back to your camp. The last shift of the day is responsible for cleaning up the station. The first shift of the following day is responsible for tidying and organizing. Although these particular shifts have an extra project, let me repeat that ALL SHIFTS are responsible for hauling their own trash out!!

Gifts for the Greeters. This is one of the things that people like about signing up for a greeter shift. Greeters generally get gifts. Most people know to give gifts to the greeters, and love to, because they are so happy to be at Flipside. Greeters do not, however, bully people or make people feel obligated to give gifts. No intimidation. Remember, not all of the people you will be greeting will be seasoned Burners. But chances are, you'll to leave with enough gifts. This has been my experience over the years.

EVERYONE GETS OUT OF THEIR CARS!!!! Everyone. No excuses!! Use the barricades in a friendly and funny way to get people to stop. Make sure everyone gets greeted and quizzed!

Group Greeting. This is an especially useful tactic for Thursday and Friday. You’ll have a line of cars and everyone needs to get greeted. What do you do? Here’s how to group greet:

  1. Pick at least 2 greeters to walk the road and flag cars to park and go down to the Station.
  2. Pick another 2 greeters to get two groups going, asking questions from the Cheat Sheet.
  3. The rest of the greeters should help direct Flipizens to groups that are beginning and holding people back until a new group starts. If you are an extra, you should tag out the walkers and talkers so everyone gets a chance to rest and play.

If you do group greet, make sure everyone is comfortable with and understands the information you’ve given them. Use the mic so you don’t lose your voice. After a big group greet, it’s amazing fun to spank everyone or do a big group Ass Wash.

In/Out Policy. Although it is discouraged, people will be allowed to go in and out of the event. A fee will be imposed for it which Gate will take care of. People who go in and out may have a card or a sticker or something in their windshield to denote that they have been greeted and are going out and back in. This may or may not happen. If someone is telling you that they’ve already been greeted, ask them a few questions from the Cheat Sheet you can remember while standing at their car. If they sufficiently answer the questions, then let them pass. If not, drag them outta that car!

Staff at the Gate. There are outside people paid to take care of letting people into the event. We as Greeters don’t need to worry about tickets. Occasionally, however, some very uncool or ignorant person will not stop at the gate to get checked in. At that moment, Gate will call Greeters with a description of the car so we can try and get them to turn around. If they are driving too fast, do not be a hero or vigilante. DO NOT put yourself in harm’s way! If you are able to flag them down, do so, and politely let them know to turn around and get properly checked in. But once again, DO NOT put yourself in harm’s way.

[edit] Things at the Greeter Station

The Walkie Talkie. The Walkie Talkie will not be walking away from the station. It MUST stay at the station through the entire event. Your Shift Lead should be the one to hang on to it. If your shift leader doesn’t show, call the Greeter Lead on the Walkie Talkie and let her know what’s up and who’s got it. There will be a sign with the channels to call the Greeter Lead, the Rangers, and PETs.

The Log Book. The Log Book is for recording any incidents, things that the following shift may need to know, or any other pertinent info. There may also be a checklist to aid in passing off to the next shift.

The Binder. There will be a binder full of all the policies of infrastructure. For example: Sound, DaFT, Burnable Art, Towing, Parking, Media, Help Desk, etc. If people have questions you cannot answer, have them refer to the binder. This binder will also have a list of all the Leads for each department and how to contact them.

The Cooler. The cooler is there for your beverages and perishable foods. If you use it, take your food home with you! There will be trash bags available for your refuse but you must take this with you as well. Leave no trace!

The Generator. This is for the DJ's equipment, the lighting, and for other things. It will need to be filled up with gas and oil once a shift. There will be instructions on it for how to do this. Be careful with the genny - you break it, you buy it, and it’s $1500. If there is a serious problem, call the Greeter Lead on the walkie talkie.

Maps. Hanging up at the GS, there will be a large map of Pyropolis pointing out all the Theme Camps, Parking, ICE, PETs, and Rangers. There will also be small maps to hand out to people.

Chairs. You are encouraged to bring your own chairs. Sometimes chairs are sometimes donated for the event. These chairs will likely be returned to the owners. Please don't destroy them; if you see someone destroying them, ask them to stop.

Think of the GS as your Theme Camp. Take care of it and the things in it like they are your own. The Greeter Lead, Heather the Great, will help in emergency situations. She will be available via Walkie Talkie anytime the station is open.

THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE AS A GREETER -
HAVE FUN AND MAKE IT FUN FOR THE PEOPLE YOU GREET!

[edit] Step 2: READ THE GREETER CHEAT SHEET

Ask these questions to everyone you greet, especially newbies! Every participant must understand these simple guidelines before entering. There are Survival Guides for people to take if they don’t know the answers. Please leave these sheets for the next shift of Greeters. Thank you!

  1. Have you read your Survival Guide? Yes! If not, give them a survival guide to read through then quiz them.
  2. Have you brought any pets or children? If they brought children, make sure they know that THEY are responsible for their children 100% of the time and what their children are exposed to. No one is expected to censor their behavior if a child is present. NO ANIMALS ALLOWED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  3. How much water did you bring? 2 gallons per person per day.
  4. Do you have enough food and supplies for this event? Yes! If not, politely tell them to turn around and get enough food and supplies for the weekend.
  5. Do you have any firearms, fireworks, or weapons of mass destruction? No, no, and no. These items are not allowed at Flipside.
  6. Did you bring a sound system (consists of pro gear: an amp, speakers, a PA)?
    1. If yes, have you spoken to the Sound Marshall, Whatamelon? If they have not, show them the poster for the sound policy and let them know how to get in touch with Whatamelon.
    2. Do you understand the Sound Policy and do you know what “Deafcon 10” is? There will be a hotline this year for neighboring residents to call if the music is too loud. All of Flipside will have 10 minutes to cut their subs or turn down their music or we will not be allowed back to Flatcreek next year.
  7. Do you have anything to sell? Hell no. ‘round these parts we gift everything… even bartering is discouraged.
  8. Are you planning on taking pictures or video this weekend? If yes, proceed to question b.
    1. Is your camera or video camera for personal or commercial use? If personal, let them know they must AT ALL TIMES ask permission before taking someone’s picture. If commercial, proceed to question c.
    2. IMPORTANT: all persons with video cameras must sign a Personal Use Agreement and check in with the Media Liason, Scott Kentros. Send them to the Media Table at the PVC desk in the Grove. Persons arriving at night need to go by the next morning.
    3. Are you a commercial photographer or with a media outlet? (e.g. newspapers, commercial websites, tv shows, newscasts, etc)? Ask them if they have a Media Pass from the Media Liaison. If they don’t, send them to the Media Table at the Help Desk to fill out a form with their info and talk to Scott. Persons arriving at night need to check in with the Rangers.
  9. What is MOOP and how will your camp deal with it? Matter Out of Place. It includes: cans, refuse, cigarette butts, plastic rings, bits of twine, anything that is on the ground that does not naturally grow there. Before leaving the event, all camps must walk their site and pick up all the MOOP. Leave No Trace!
    1. Where do your full trash bags go after the event? Pack it in, pack it out! Take them back to your house or apartment trash cans. Recycle!
  10. What do you do if you have a disagreement with someone? Resolve it in a peaceful manner, utilize your friends as mediators. If no mutual agreement can be found, find a Ranger – those peeps in the snazzy khaki.
  11. If you smoke, do you have a tin to carry with you to put your butts in? If yes, congratulate them. If not, give them a tin.
  12. If you brought a mutant vehicle, should you or anyone else drive this car intoxicated? NO! People at Flipside can still get DUIs and DWIs. It is far too easy to seriously injury or kill someone with a vehicle on this land. Please don’t leave your mutant vehicle unattended. You will be held responsible for any damages caused by someone else driving your vehicle. Speed limit anywhere at FS is 5mph.
  13. What is the Towing Policy this year? If you are in an area that is not marked for car camping and is not a parking lot, then you will be towed. You will have ample time to move your car before this happens and the Towing crew will do their best to notify you. Refer to the Towing Policy in the binder if they have questions.
  14. What are some signs of dehydration? If you experience irritation, snappiness, or are in an unexplainable bad mood, get somewhere cool and drink water slowly. If you experience dizziness, fever, fainting - seek medical attention from the PETs. The PETs are located in the Grove and wear maroon.
  15. What does “no” mean? No, stop, red light, thumbs down, you shall not pass! Everyone is responsible for asking when something is okay with another, and for setting their own boundaries.
  16. Who is responsible for your experience at this event? Each person is responsible for their own experience.
  17. How are you participating?? Just about any answer is good for this one.

If you get lost, walk uphill, find a ranger. If you get lost at night, walk uphill, follow the light, find a ranger.

There are a lot of cacti out here, also snakes, insects, spiders, and wildlife. Please be careful. Respect the fact that you are having a party in their home.

Practice Fire Safety! No unattended fires, including tiki torches. No ground fires.

There is NO camping down at the creek. The creek can flood super freaking fast during and after rains. Don't swim alone. Don't swim at night, you can potentially die of hypothermia. There is also no camping at the Grove – it is our Center Camp.

Heed all event boundary markers and street signs! This includes caution tape (cliffs!), red rope light, orange safety fence, and piles of cut-up cactus (strategically placed where people should not go). For your safety, DO NOT PASS THE BOUNDARIES! DO NOT REMOVE THEM OR STREET SIGNS!

Locations of popular spots (show them on the map): Parking ICE (2 locations!) Pyropolis Volunteer Conscription (Help Desk) The Grove: Rangers & Pets

[edit] Step 3: Sign Up for a Shift

[edit] Do not fear the wiki!

Please read the Greeter Training Guide and the Greeter Cheat sheet above before signing up. There will be Greeter info sessions held twice in May. Shift leads will be contacted with special instructions so be sure to leave your email address.

Click on the edit tab and add your name where you would like to greet.
Leave your name, email address, and where to find you at Flipside, like a theme camp <--- this is super important!

Check back here often as people shift around and information changes. If you find you cannot commit to the shift, please take your name out as soon as possible so others can sign up. Please fill out empty or sparse shifts before signing up on full shifts. Thank you!
