What Is an Effigy?

kit

2011 Effigy. Photo by Shibuya Daze.Austin, Texas -- At Burning Flipside, our effigies vary a great deal each year. With Texas's seemingly endless drought, we are faced with the issue of how to plan for the future and what to do if we cannot burn as was almost the case this year. The Combustion Chamber has created the following survey to gather community feedback on what is important about effigies.

My First Flipside

kit

FirehatsPyropolis, Texas (by Matt Black, Web Content Team) -- Flipside was quite the experience. It's hard to put into words, really -- you can describe it, the people, the experiences, the feelings -- but there's something about it that intensifies all the energy and creativity and madness that everyone brings to the table. It has a way of changing you. Peeling away the unnecessary bits you've been holding onto, that you thought were so important, and breaking you down to your core. Reborn.

A Look Back At Flipside 2011

Click for full-size version.Pyropolis, TX (by Kit O'Connell & the Web Content Team) -- With almost 2,500 people in attendance, Burning Flipside, Central Texas' annual regional festival inspired by Burning Man, was a huge success. Held over Memorial Day weekend, this year’s theme was "Bad Idea," inspiring a host of wonderful artworks, theme camps, and events. The effigy, a stunning work designed by Dotti Spearman called Burning Bridges, was completed Saturday after months of hard work by the Design and Fabrication Team (DaFT). It was later opened to exploration by the community. Despite initial concerns that it would remain unburned, a series of fortunate events and favorable decisions led to the gorgeous ritual destruction of the massive wooden artwork on Sunday night.

Leave No Trace (LNT) At Flipside

LNT Crusader. By Chloé Womack.Pyropolis, Texas (by Wrinn, Site Sign-Off Area Facilitator) -- We as a community proudly announce that one of our very core principals is accountability. From elsewhere on this website: ”We hold ourselves responsible for ... the event's impact on the world at large.” The words stem from a distillation of one of Burning Man’s ten principals - Leave No Trace. As it is stated “We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather.” What does this mean?

Rainy Weather at Flipside 2011?

Photo by Louise Docker.Pyropolis, TX (by Labeaux, Web Content Team) -- A visit to Pyropolis includes an opportunity to coexist with the rich outdoor environment of Central Texas. In addition to crawling insects, blazing sun, and hostile plant life, weather can change rapidly and unpredictably. A common saying goes, “If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.” For Texas in the springtime, this is at times literally the case.

Eye See Lasers

kit

Lasers at Flipside 2005 by Nametag.Austin, Texas (by Joseph Noctum, Web Content Team) -- As a general rule, we love flashy things whether it's a sparkly outfit, some blinky lights, or a big bright fire. So when we see a laser light show we go absolutely bonkers at all the bright pretty lights. It takes us back to the days of kids running around with space guns, shouting "pew pew" at each other. However, unlike those innocent days, there are some real concerns with the lasers we have today. Mainly, we don't want anyone performing amateur laser eye surgery on our fellow Flipizens. By following a few guidelines and arming ourselves with some general knowledge, we can avoid the potentially harmful effects and enjoy our pretty lasers in safety.
