What Is an Effigy?

kit

2011 Effigy. Photo by Shibuya Daze.Austin, Texas -- At Burning Flipside, our effigies vary a great deal each year. With Texas's seemingly endless drought, we are faced with the issue of how to plan for the future and what to do if we cannot burn as was almost the case this year. The Combustion Chamber has created the following survey to gather community feedback on what is important about effigies.

My First Flipside

kit

FirehatsPyropolis, Texas (by Matt Black, Web Content Team) -- Flipside was quite the experience. It's hard to put into words, really -- you can describe it, the people, the experiences, the feelings -- but there's something about it that intensifies all the energy and creativity and madness that everyone brings to the table. It has a way of changing you. Peeling away the unnecessary bits you've been holding onto, that you thought were so important, and breaking you down to your core. Reborn.

Poofy: The Smallest Art Car in Town

kit

Pyropolis, TX (by Patrick Foye, Web Content Team) - Relaxing inside Candyland around dusk, I noticed a cloaked figure walking the street in the coming darkness. A small object crept behind, edging its way to their shuffling feet. They turned and with that came a burst of yellow flame. "Whoa!" and a jump was all they could muster. Rightfully so: No one expects Poofy, a small remote controlled vehicle, to produce a big flame, illuminating excited faces in the night.

Send Your Stuff with Ouroboros!

kit

Austin, Tx (by Delia, Flipside CORE Project) -- It's getting close to the exodus to the desert. Our crew is finishing up the Ouroboros build, Flipside's entry in the CORE project. The last major item to complete before the final build on the playa? Getting stuff out there! The CORE Crew is offering a Community Truck from Austin to the Black Rock desert and back. Do you have gear that needs to go to the playa? Would you like for it to go out with us? The truck load is happening soon and to get involved you must register your information by 11:59pm 8/10. Space is limited, so the sooner you register the better. See the Flipside CORE Project Website for details and registration link.

CORE: Building Memories

kit

Builders collaborate on Ouroboros.Austin, Texas (by Dick Towers, Web Content Team) -- When I first started helping with Ouroboros, the Flipside CORE project, it seemed like there was enough momentum from DaFT members that we would be half way done with the build in the first week. I then realized that an effigy of this size is more complex than the little model on display in the warehouse. It's taken the work of many more volunteers to get this far and will still need the community's help to succeed.

Inside the Civilian Safety Zone

Addison and Pyropolis, TX (by Mumbles Prometheus, Web Content Team) -- The walls of the apartment were draped with what looked like drop cloths, splattered in a chaotic array of colors and patterns. The aesthetic was somewhere between Jackson Pollock and the tagged up side of a building. On the stub of wall above the counter that separated the kitchen from the living room was a printed out banner that read in large letters "Civilian Safety Zone."

On Saturday night, area circus arts performers along with the Vespertine Circus, a visiting troup, present Free CircX For the People at the Warehouse. Together, these events promise more fun then spending your days off playing video games or watching cartoons on the Internet.

A Look Back At Flipside 2011

Click for full-size version.Pyropolis, TX (by Kit O'Connell & the Web Content Team) -- With almost 2,500 people in attendance, Burning Flipside, Central Texas' annual regional festival inspired by Burning Man, was a huge success. Held over Memorial Day weekend, this year’s theme was "Bad Idea," inspiring a host of wonderful artworks, theme camps, and events. The effigy, a stunning work designed by Dotti Spearman called Burning Bridges, was completed Saturday after months of hard work by the Design and Fabrication Team (DaFT). It was later opened to exploration by the community. Despite initial concerns that it would remain unburned, a series of fortunate events and favorable decisions led to the gorgeous ritual destruction of the massive wooden artwork on Sunday night.
