GIT EDJUMICATED!
Greetings, Flipizens. This could be the easiest article I’ve ever written, because it’s almost completely plagarized from Nobodobodon’s journal! HA! HA! HA! I was *going to* write about the virtues of the 10 principles of Burning Man, but I’ve never met this Larry Harvey person and I really like Nobody a whole lot better anyway. Isn’t Larry Harvey that guy who played “J.R.” on “Dallas” in the ‘80’s? Fuckifyno. Oh yeah, and by the way, “Newbies” will now be spelled NOOBIES, ‘cause NOOBIES looks much more like BOOBIES and “BOOBIES” are way more funnerer than “Newbies”. But I digress….without further ado….:
NOBODOBODON’S SLIGHT MODIFICATION OF THE 10 PRINCIPLES OF BURNING MAN, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE 6 AND ½ PRINCIPLES OF BURNING FLIPSIDE:
Genuine Self-Expression
Our events are intended to foster an environment in which we are free to express our true, inner selves, instead of what is expected or imposed by outside factors. We express ourselves through art, music, volunteerism, gift-giving, and in honest social interactions.
We foster this open and honest self-expression at our events in a number of ways:
Participant-created Events
Our events are not created by organizers presenting paid performers to paying spectators. Our events are created by all attendees, and all attendees are expected to contribute something to the creation of the event, whether that’s volunteerism, art, performance, gifting, event organization, or all of the above.
Non-objectification
Genuine interactions between people occurs when we treat each other as people. We will not reduce ourselves, our gifts, or our expression to commodities to be bought and sold for money, for social status, or for a “notch on the bedpost”. Gifts are given freely, with no expectation of compensation or other gifts in exchange.
Self-reliance
Self-reliance is crucial to self-expression. The more of your basic needs that are met by others, the more you cede to them your authority to choose how you express yourself. The organizers of the event provide the minimum services and structure to keep the event legal and sustainable, and to promote these values. Everything else must be provided by participants.
Civic Responsibility
Civic Responsibility ensures that other participants are able to express themselves. All participants strive to find a balance so their self-expression doesn’t interfere with the self-expression of any other participants. Additionally, participants seek to help keep events sustainable by volunteering, cleaning up after themselves, and assuming personal responsibility for conducting themselves in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Inclusion
We seek to express ourselves honestly to all other participants regardless of differences in their background, experiences, and tastes. The only prerequisite for participation in any of our events is an honest effort to abide by our principles and guidelines. This is not just a gate policy, it’s a mindset by which we foster one another’s self-expression.
Immediacy
The most genuine interactions between individuals occur when both parties are present in the moment, focusing on what is occurring as it unfolds. Much of the art at our events is not intended to outlast the duration of the event. Recording the sights and sounds of the event is less important than living the experience firsthand.

!Bob’s List up: http://plasmator.net/tickety08
It may move elsewhere sometime before Flipside. In the meantime, it’s rate limited to 150 messages per hour, 750 per day. Messages are queued, then sent in random order, so you’ve got as much chance to be in that first 150 as anyone else. Good luck.
Range Rover
All are welcome to participate in Ranger Training. Even if you don’t think you’ll have an opportunity to step into an official shift.
Every person at Flipside has the ability to be a Ranger at any given moment. When you stop to check on someone, help someone find their lost camp, run to find help when someone is hurt, or lend an ear to another’s troubles, you are a Ranger.
Come to the training and find out about what help is available, how to get in contact with a network of crisis management, and just what the Rangers are all about.
However, if you want a shirt, a radio, and 6 hours of walking around and interacting with your community, then you need to attend one of the trainings.
If you are interested, contact Damon at rangerlead08@burningflipside.com. Dates for Houston are still TBD.

Night in a Kuchie:
World Reggae Dance
at SCARAB Camp
After 6 years on the playa, SCARAB Camp is coming to Flipside for this first time in ’08. And as we’ve done on the playa each year, SCARAB will be hosting an intimate world music dance…..this year’s theme is Night in a Kuchie: World Reggae Dance. Come join us on Friday night of the event, 8-10:45pm, as we play easy skankin’ sounds from all over the world: India, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Algeria, France, Canada, Dominican Republic and, of course, Jamaica. Hosted by the long-time SCARAB musical director and co-founder WaltSnipe, who will be giving away copies of the night’s mix to the dancers.
For Flipside ’08, SCARAB Camp will be an exotic oasis at Flat Creek…an intimate stop on your wanderings through the night. SCARAB will provide world music of an astonishing variety throughout the event, with an equally-exotic international visual design to the camp. Feel like you’ve stepped into a phantom zone, decorated in the styles of every place that is Other. A million little lights blink off in the distance…is it an island in this chaotic sea? You wander closer. Strange, compelling sounds emanate from within. Glowing, flashing original art installations tower over your head. A giant shining tiki glowers at you from the treeline. But from the dark alcoves, you are beckoned inward. A welcoming grotto awaits you, with places to sit and take a load off. Have you really been on your feet for so long? Your tootsies, now at repose, say “yes.” The SCARAB Tiki Bar calls to you from the corner, with tropical concoctions to sooth your parched throat and loosen your tongue. Grind your own frozen concoction with our full-size hand-crank blender…You need to sit down…Is there a place to put your drink down? …Yes! SCARAB knows you need flat spaces by your chair…Are you relaxed? Good. SCARAB Camp will create all the ambiance and catalyst you need to have those quality conversations with friends and soon-to-be friends that make Burner events special. In the true spirit of the original tiki craze, SCARAB Camp will transport you through sight and sound to another place, outside of time, where you can relax and be the most you that you can be.
Tiki Totems
This year, our effigy will be surrounded by 10 tiki totems. The tiki totems will be internally lit and contain flame at the top.
Hey There, You Artisty Types!!!
Wanna help contribute to the Effigy?
Then this here call is for You!
There will be 10 burn barrel totems surrounding the effigy, each a respresentation of one of the Ten (count ‘em, TEN!) years of Flipside. Each totem will be made of 3 steel drums welded on top of one another. Got a Favorite year? One that Epitomizes your Flippy-dip Expierence? Come up with a design! Call a year and email Lance, then design your Fire-Barrel Tiki!
DaFT will provide the base totem, as well as tools to cut and decorate it as you please.
This will involve Plasma cutting and possible welding, and is a great oppurtunity to get yo’ groove on with some hot tools!
Should you not want to play with tools, you can still design. DAFT or a tool-hungry person, can still help!
The totem design can represent any aspect of its particular year of Flipside. Perhaps your group wishes to make your design around the year’s theme, or that year’s effigy, or some important milestone for Flipside that year...
To reserve a year/totem, or for more information, email Lance at lancehunter@gmail.com

The Pyropolis Street Sign
Construction & Placement Committee
Present’s for Your Consideration
You’re all invited to have some fun stretching your imaginations & using your hand-eye coordination to produce some homegrown Pyropolis Street Sign’s. The street names will be suggested by the public! Begin thinking of appropiate street names to commerate our 10 year anniversay with....& let the games begin.
I’d like to make an announcement about the collecting of scrap wood by our freeform community that’s in a usable form of about 3’x1’ or possibly at little smaller or larger, we’re not that choosey. Some of the City Large Trash days may be coming up soon for your ‘hood & if you’d be so kind as to grab some wood or any paint in cans or spray cans, you can stash the wood next to the fireplace in the corner & the paint in the storeroom. Used paint brushes are also needed & even the larger 1”-3” brushes can be re-cycled to paint the background of the signs. If you have a group of buddies that would like to decorate a series of say 1-4 street signs with their own designs & color but incorporating the street name, then send your idea/design to crispyburner@earthlink.net
We’ve never considered adding some lighting to signs before (probably for a good reason) & I’m not sure if it’s workable but if you’ve got a million $ idea & you would like to construct a “Special Lighted Street Sign”, send me your idea & also to the austin-list if you desire greater feedback. This particular sign could possibily be located at a place that’s well traveled on a tall pole. Maybe a 10’ tall metal pole well greased would solve that potential problem of it being taken before it’s time is due.
The Street Sign Church nights will start in early May or earlier depending on other groups needs of the Werehouse.
Saints and sinners,
