• New Dog Rule
o “Based on feedback from the community, the CC has revisited the rule about no dogs at
the warehouse and decided to change it.
Dog owners must know that the warehouse is a dangerous place. There are a lot of
things going on(welding, DAFT construction, random chemicals) that could result in a
serious injury/death for a dog. The CC recommends that people not bring their dogs to
the warehouse, but they are allowed under the following condtions:
1. Dogs will not be allowed inside the warehouse.
2. Dogs will be allowed outside the warehouse provided they are on a leash(no longer
than 6 feet) and under control of a person. A dog dragging a leash around is *not*
under control of the owner.
3. Owners must be fully responsible for your dog. If it takes a crap outside the
warehouse, clean it up. Don't let it pee on stuff around the warehouse. If your dog
causes "problems", you and the dog will be asked to leave the warehouse. You are
welcome to return without the dog. The definition of "problems" is left to the
discretion of the warehouse host.
The LLC has the authority to return to the 'No Dogs' rule at anytime. “
• No dogs inside is concern about welding, power tools, allergies, tripping over the dog.
• Rule is approved.
• AI: Casey to send it out on List.
• Theme Camp Council
o Talk about common theme camp stuff, social etc. Biannual get together. No real LLC
or CC involvement.
o Don’t see a theme camp council deciding anything especially not by consenus.
o The theme camp leads that feel they need input should probably join the CC, not
create another council.
o Meet your neighbors ahead of time and if you come up with a list of things that you
want to change at Flipside give it to the CC.
o Have a CC member go over and facilitate or witness the meeting.
o Theme camp leads have a different set of desires and approach to the event than
the kind of person that wants to be on the CC.
o Invite theme camp leads to a CC meeting.
o Maybe some recommendations for new CC members can come out of this.
o We have lots of theme camps from all over, not even just Texas.
o Maybe a list-serv. CC should ask this list for feedback and input.
o CC/Theme camp mixer.
o Interested in what theme camp leads have to say about sustainability. And hope
they are interested in what we have to say.
o Out of 2500, 1500 don’t fully get our culture. There is also a subset of the theme
camp leads that don’t get the culture.
o So whatever we can do to share our culture we are all for. Not too formal, make it
fun.
o Integrate better with theme camp leads.
o All of the above. We have to try. We have tried to get the theme camp leads
together both physically and electronically and neither of these worked.
o Shouldn’t be wedded to names. Use Flipside as a venue, meet up on site. Send
emails out after the event to ask how things went.
o Bring up some small efforts even if we don’t say yes to “Theme Camp Council”
o We already have a list dedicated to community issues. Anyone can join this. Theme
camp leads are not cut off from participating.
o Voting on policy is probably not a good idea in a large group. Consensus on large
ideals is possible.
o Have a CC/Theme camp mixer at Flipside that really focuses on out of town people.
We could have one in town too. Get the ideas from them on site.
o One theme camp talked about sobriety shifts.
o Theme camps can solve some of their own problems which should help reduce the
burden on the rest of us.
o We have theme camps ranging from 120 people to 1 person. We can’t just mix them
all under the label “Theme Camps”
o Maybe we can get more productive discussion on a separate list without all the
miscellaneous chatter.
o Theme camp registration closes May 1st.
o Some social aspect with possibly addition of a list.
o CC is all for an event at Flipside.
o AI: !Bob to send out an email/invite to a theme camp list.
. Allow for deputies or lieutenants.
o Try and stop drama on the list before it starts. Don’t name names.
o Future Agenda item: Someone to wordsmith an email about theme camp list/get
together at Flipside.
• Wristbands
o Safety AF has decided to have wristbands.
o Yay! We have Wristbands.
o None of us really like the idea of a wristband, but we are going to try to make it
schwag.
o We have to communicate what the CC talks about and what leads decide to the
community as a whole. And there are hard limits that have to be met.
o The wristband decision happened after the last CC meeting. We got it put in the
survival guide due to a printing problem.
o At a small after CC meeting consensus was not blocked on wristbands.
o It’s more important that decisions are made and that progress is made than sitting
around talking about it.
o What do wristbands get us?
. Perimeter is difficult to secure at this location.
. The event boundary is our boundary; we can’t stop people before they
enter the event.
. We need some way to identify people before they enter the event.
. We could use the wristbands to indentify underagers.
o Some people really want the ankle band option.
o What can we do with the wristbands? We can get woven wristbands out of
polyester cloth. We can get some cool designs. UV reactive. Radiation exposure
under UV light maybe.
o It’s a liability issue. Helps us make sure the waver has been signed.
o It makes the ranger’s jobs easier.
o UV under the black light being the only way to find a under 21 is a pretty bad idea.
The under 21 wristband needs to be blatantly obvious.
o Are we trying to control our population? This is a good way to solve our perimeter
problems but there are issues with further identifying people like this. We shouldn’t
do this to make life easier for TABC.
o Just doing things to reduce risk doesn’t make it better.
o Put riddles or random phrases on the wristbands for instant socialization.
o Hope this is a red flag about this land. Find the red flags about this land early.
o Ankles vs. Wrist things. “I’m not taking off my boot to show you.”
. You can easily cover things on your ankles vs your wrists.
o Lot of cool colors for the wristbands. If we do different wristbands it is more
expensive.
o Placement optional, the people at the gate have to put them on. So wristbands are
preferable for that reason.
o Wristbands are a fun memento.
o Have a blank area to write what you want on the wristband.
o Don’t use them to identify groups.
o This will help us identify the people that are slipping in.
o Encourage the parents to write their names/camp on the wristbands.
o “The German’s had flair they made the Jews wear.” Under 21 isn’t really a good idea,
maybe under 18. But underage drinking isn’t our major concern here.
o This group needs to respect and stand behind the operational leads and AFs.
o This whole thing is an experiment.
o An age difference has not been a requirement for the wristbands.
o We were faced with a quick decision about land. The LLC is catching up on the event
because of the land change.
o The LLC signed up to protect this community. If some yahoo jumps the fence and
gets hurt and sues us we have lost.
o The people that cut off their wristbands aren’t screwing with the LLC, they are
screwing with everybody.
o We have been putting this subject off for 10 years. Every year people have snuck
into Flipside.
o If we start labeling people by age then we take responsibility for enforcing things
like drinking age. This is a difficult business to be involved in.
o We should not let the wristband design get out until before the event.
• LLC Update
o The LLC met with the sheriff. It was a really good meeting with the sheriff. We are
paranoid.
o Ghost would like to apologize about his absurd dialog.
o Last Wednesday the LLC met with the Sheriff. He is a close friend of the land owener.
Sheriff Greene is from Milam County. He served there for 30 years as Game Warden.
Is pretty open minded. Is a big fan of us coming to spend money there. It has
already got back to him that we are trying to spend money there.
o He has agreed to let us use some of his deputies to do traffic control.
o He wants his deputies to be able to look around. The LLC will give them a tour. We
like police officers. They are our friends and there to keep us safe.
o We need to make the police officers trip to flipside as enjoyable as possible. We
want to be with them at all times. No codes on the radios.
o Sound. The sheriff does not believe people will be too concerned.
o The land owner says no one comes down the river. Is someone going to come by
during the event and see some nudity? We don’t know. As long as we don’t make a
problem, there is no problem.
o We have had law enforcement drive through at all the locations.
o If you see someone doing something blatantly illegal in view of a public road you
may want to tell them that it is illegal.
o What are the sheriff’s major concerns? The Sherriff is worried about what the land
owner is concerned about. Are we a bunch of liars or are we shooting straight.
Children. He wants to know that people are responsible for children and worried
about what happens when a child is lost.
o Has he been monitoring our event? The sheriff has researched Burning Man and has
our website.
o Safety camp out this weekend. We had about 70 or 80 people show up for training.
o Nobody is stepping down after the event.
o The location is encouraging out of towners.
• Communication issues
o We need to communicate problems better. We also need to make sure that
AF/CC/Safety type lists are as noise free as possible.
o Let’s not forget to have fun.
o Flipside is too important to be taken seriously.
o When we don’t tell people fast enough. We get problems with group writing and
what if we tell people wrong? It takes two weeks to say anything.
o The CC needs to take more responsibility for understanding what the LLC is saying
with lack of word smithing.
o We’ve had discussions about wristbands before. This wasn’t announced two days
before the event this was announced significantly before the event.
o Things have gotten out slowly at times and things have seemed to happen in back
rooms at times. This is just going to happen with this event being volunteer run.
