Nelumbo is a genus of aquatic plants with large, showy flowers resembling water lilies, commonly known as lotus. Previously there were only two known living species in the genus: the sacred lotus (N. nucifera), which is native to Asia & also the national flower of India; and the American lotus (N. lutea), which is native to North America and the Caribbean. Botanists have discovered a third rare species (N. dentata), an exceptionally large specimen with a range limited to the San Gabriel River of Texas.
