Good Flipizenship

kit

The 2010 Effigy. Photo by Patrick. Pyropolis, Texas (by The Cat Lady, Clean Up Lead) -- Being a good flipizen isn’t all that hard. The 3 Cs pretty much cover it all: a little Common sense, a little Cooperation, and a little Consideration is just about all you need to get you through almost any situation that might come up. If that’s too vague for you and you need more guidance than that, you can use the Three Flipside Principles to govern your actions. They are: Self Expression, Accountability, and Cooperation. If that’s not enough for you, there’s always Nobodobodon’s Expanded Principles list. Just for grinzies, let’s use that one to bring some real enlightenment to the subject.

Volunteering and Self Care

Sanctuary LogoPyropolis, Texas (by Gyesika Safety, Sanctuary Lead) -- First published in the Flipside Flame! We are an all-volunteer run community and as such many of us love to help out, pitch in and do the do. That motivation to assist each other is admirable and it makes the event go every year. However, we’re all human, we’re all participants and there comes a point when you need to take care of you.

What is Disinformation (and How to Help)?

Brent Donnell, Disinformation Lead
Austin, Texas (by Kit O'Connell, Web Content Lead) -- Burning Flipside is an exercise in controlled chaos. Although many theme camps put on events, and both the effigy and Parks Department installations feature performance stages, without assistance the community wouldn't know when to show up and where! One solution are the Disinformation Kiosks, located throughout Pyropolis. I met with Brent Donnell, 2011 Disinformation Lead, and asked him about his vision and how the community can help.

Pyropolis, Texas -- Puzz, Burning Flipside Theme Camp Liason, Map and Placement Lead, released 2011's theme camp map on Tuesday night. This year's placement took many factors into account, such as traffic flow and noise level. More roads and paths are available, with names based on the recent street name poll. Puzz said, "We have worked to place camps in villages, neighborhoods and similarly themed areas. We hope you notice and that this makes for a better experience for everyone." The map is available in both .jpg image and .pdf document formats.

Cars, Pyropolis and You

kit

Gallows, Parking Lead, photo by Amy BoydPyropolis, Texas (by Dick Towers, Web Content Team) -- Chances are that you're going to get to Flipside in an automobile. With so many participants, this makes for a massive mess of metal to manage. Cars take up valuable real estate, and pose potential hazards. Being responsible for your car allows for a more relaxed environment, both physically and mentally.

Why Ranger Training Is Awesome

kit

Pyropolis, Texas (Kit O'Connell, Web Content Lead) -- The Pyropolis Rangers are the nervous system of Burning Flipside. They watch, listen, and mediate when situations grow difficult. Most of all, they keep an eye on our temporary city so that we can feel safer having fun in it. After years of avoiding ranger training, I had a great time and learned a surprising amount. With more training sessions for this critical role scheduled soon in Austin, Houston and Dallas, I wanted to share my experiences and encourage our community to volunteer and attend.
