Volunteer with DAFT

Congratulations on your decision to join the highly-skilled and much-sought-after Design and Fabrication Team. Welcome! We can and will use you and others like you to design, build, implement, and assemble this year's effigy, "Dr. Tiki, the Hula Girl".

About DaFT

DaFT is the entity responsible for the epicenter of Flipside - the effigy! Working together as a team (sometimes even a well-oiled machine - but more often than not, a semi-chaotic organized mess of construction!) Building an effigy is no small task and involves great multitudes of committed, hard-working people. Everyone has a job to do, and everyone is here for each other. Together, we can create something much greater than the sum of our parts. A good portion of this year's team will be re-joining us from last year, bringing with them a year's worth of experience, cooperation, and concepts - we welcome you to our team and hope to mutually benefit.

What Can I Hope to Gain from Helping?

To begin with, be prepared to develop a close and lasting bond with your fellow volunteers. This rag-tag group of strangers will quickly become treasured friends. By working with new media and ideas, your skill set will increase dramatically. A year ago, I could barely distinguish a hammer from a saw. Now I'm comfortable enough to plasma cut steel! And last but not least - the respect and admiration of your Flipizen peers - something you can't put a price tag on.

Organizational Structure

This year's plan is based around independent teams each with 'leader' positions who can teach new comers about project. Each lead is responsible for a certain aspect or mechanism of the design. There are separate leads for gears, marbles, structural engineering, totems, etc. The effigy will be built in pieces and has many parts; the goal is to enable anyone to make these parts and assemble them as needed.

How do I Join?

Joining DAFT can be done in three simple steps:

  1. Come to Church Night
  2. Identify a DAFT Leader (wearing bright orange shirts)
  3. Tell them you want to help

Your level of involvement is entirely up to you. You can come in and work for a night, or you can dedicate every hour of the next few months to it (it happens).
