Description
A Lead is a member of the Flipside community tasked with organizing a particular aspect of the event and recruiting volunteers as needed to help them achieve their goals as that Lead position.
Liability Leads
Certain Lead positions are denoted as Liability Leads. These positions deal with sensitive event issues that may affect the event's legal standing, and as such the LLC typically has a direct hand in selecting these Leads. If you are interested in one of these positions, please feel free to contact a member of the LLC, or that Lead's AF for more information. These Lead positions bear an increased responsibility and professionalism.

Area Facilitator: LLC
Admin Lead/LLC Cat Wrangler
The Admin Lead/LLC Cat Wrangler is responsible for coordinating and facilitating operations within the AAR LLC system by ensuring proper documentation of decisions/meetings by the LLC as well as ensuring that the lines of communication within the LLC and the community remain open and transparent. As well as making sure the AAR-LLC is informed about operations prior to/after the event, but helping them to focus on the legal liability issues in order to ensure the future of the event.
CC Scribe
The Combustion Chamber Scribe is responsible for keeping CC notes/meeting minutes, and for herding the room full of cats. The CC Scribe has recently been re-termed Scribinatrix. And don't you forget it, or you are all going to get the riding crop applied.
Equipment Librarian
The Equipment Librarian is responsible for maintaining an inventory of LLC-owned tools and equipment. This person coordinates documented lending and return of certain types of equipment. If this position is not filled, no equipment is lent outside of the fenced warehouse area.
Off-season Event Planning
The Off-Season Event Planning Lead is responsible for coordinating events that are not Flipside. These tasks may be offloaded onto someone else at times, but in general, this lead will be the point contact for all "other" official events.
Regional Outreach
The Regional Outreach Lead is responsible for establishing contact with the other Regional burn communities (Transformus, Toast, Playa Del Fuego, Apogaea, etc) and inviting members of their community to Flipside.
Site Prep
The Site Prep Lead organizes Work Weekends, both by organizing volunteers prior to and coordinating volunteers during the work weekend. They are also in charge of making sure the necessary equipment is available for the planned activities, interacting with the landowner or their representative if LLC is not available, and making sure shade, safety, waiver and water are available as needed.
Warehouse Manager
The Warehouse Manager Lead is responsible for overseeing the usage of the warehouse and its upkeep.

Burnable Art
The Burnable Art Lead coordinates burnable art. This Lead identifies and contacts the artists of art intended for burning at Flipside; ensures that artists take measures to prevent burn scars; schedules art burn times on and off the "Burn Night;" facilitates and ensures coordination between the artists and the Fire Safety team; ensures that no art is burned without the presence of Fire Safety; and ensures that artists Leave No Trace of their burned art.
Burn Night Coordinator

Church Night Coordinator
The Church Night Coordinator is responsible for generating Church Night hype; there to spam the lists with Flipside positive goodness to help foster participation in creating our fair city!
City and Street Signage
The City & Street Signage Lead is responsible for coordinating the creation and installation of all artistic signs to be used at Flipside. While mainly associated with the creation of the year's Street Signs, this position is by no means limited to just that. In fact, many folks could benefit from having some help building and painting their own signs. The ideal person for this position is organized, creative, and excited about creating opportunities for members of the Flipside community to express themselves.
DaFT (*)
The DaFT Lead is responsible for leading the team that creates the effigy. This position requires a strong commitment to the project, an ability to meet deadlines, and a positive attitude. It’s also a good idea to have some design and construction skills. There are many experienced people in the community who are available to help the DaFT Lead.

Grove Host
The Grove Host is a Lead responsible for coordinating the activities and performances that will occur at the Grove. The Grove Host should be an organized person who is willing to facilitate artistic performances at the Grove and handle any potential conflicts that may arise calmly and appropriately.
Procession Coordinator
The Procession Coordinator is a Lead responsible for organizing the procession on the night of the burn. This position requires lots of creativity and the ability to work (and play) very well with others. You should also be familiar with fire safety, as many of your performers will likely be playing with fire. The procession changes every year, so this is a great position if you want to put on a fabulous show in a completely unique manner. Previous leads have used the Procession as a theatrical performance (the Voodoo Wedding in 2005), or as a Pied Piper-style parade that seeks to pull the populace from their camps and continues to grow as it winds its way through the city, finally ending at the effigy (2006). This position is rich with potential!
Pyrotechnics (*)
This person is responsible for designing, purchasing, and implementing a fireworks show to accompany the burning of the Effigy. They or someone on their team should be a trained and licensed pyrotechnician. They will assist the Fire Safety and Burn Night Coordination teams in determining whether and when conditions are favorable for a fireworks show. They should also be available to provide input and advice to DaFT team members, where pyrotechnology is used in the effigy.

City Planning Admin
The City Planning Admin is responsible for managing the data input needs of the City Planning team. The Admin will work closely with the City Planning team to ensure the FS website has the right tools and information to smoothly process all required data. Candidate should be experienced with data entry, website design, HTML, CSS, and database administration.
Flags/Camp Boundaries
The Flags Lead is responsible for translating the theme camp placement map into actual, flagged boundaries on-site at the event. Flagging generally occurs the Sunday before the opening day of the event. The Flag Lead is responsible for building 9 three-person teams to flag all the theme camps in each of the 9 zones. The Flag Lead uses a variety of tools to accurately lay out each theme camp's boundary. The Flag Lead will work closely with the Theme Camp Placement Lead and Map Lead to ensure each camp is allocated its proper space. The Flag Lead may be called upon to resolve boundary issues caused by misplaced flags, absent flags, or improperly measured boundaries.
Genesis
The Genesis / Introdus Lead is responsible for troubleshooting the traffic between Gate, Greeters, and Parking during peak entry periods on-site at the event. This lead will be allocated a radio, a cart, and whatever relevant information is necessary to solve traffic issues. This lead has the authority to suggest alternate solutions to increasing the flow of traffic at any of the three major choke points (Gate, Greeters & Parking). The Genesis Lead will work closely with Gate, Greeters, and Parking before the event to establish a traffic plan.
Greeters
The Greeters Lead is responsible for coordinating all of the details of greeting the participants that arrive at Flipside, acutely increasing their excitement about the event, and educating them about Flipside's core values. This position requires excitement and exceptional patience. You must be able to delegate and motivate. Experience as a Greeter is a must.
InterZone Coordinator
The InterZone Coordinator is responsible for supervising the placement of theme camps on-site at the event. This individual manages each of the Zone Greeter teams and provides direction when needed. The InterZone Coordinator works closely with the Theme Camp Placement Lead to solve problems on-site and has the authority to resolve camp placement issues in leiu of the Theme Camp Placement Lead and City Planning AF. This is an important position requiring the individual to be on call for the first 72 hours of the event. The InterZone Coordinator generally works from 10am to 10pm for the first 3 days of the event. The InterZone Coordinator maintains the Zone Placement Guides, oversees radio distribution to Zone Greeters, ensures Zone Greeters and City Planning personnel take breaks, get food & water, and are relieved in a timely manner. The InterZone Coordinator may be required to travel frequently between the Greeter Station and each of the 9 Theme Camp Zones. This is a demanding volunteer position requiring the candidate to go through a formal interview process and subsequent training before being assigned a position.
Parking
The Parking Lead is responsible for working with the land owners, greeters and rangers to create the best possible parking environment. Considerations for the volume of vehicles, congestion and safety are all handled by the Parking Lead, with the assistance of their pool of volunteers and other entities. The Parking Lead must be patient, diligent, organized, and effective when dealing with conflict.
Placement
The Placement Lead is responsible for placing each theme camp, art installation, and event infrastructure. This lead works closely with each theme camp, event volunteers, and registered artists to ensure that the needs of the participants are met along with the needs of the event. The Placement This Lead is responsible for interpreting the data provided by placement registrants and translating this information into a master plan for the entire event. Candidates for this position must be excellent communicators with strong diplomacy skills. This lead is expected to communicate regularly via e-mail, telephone, and public announcements. The Placement lead works closely with the InterZone Coordinator on-site to ensure the smooth placement of theme camps. This lead is also responsible for creating and mainting the master map for the event. Because of the nature of this position, candidates will be required to undergo an in-depth interview and screening. This position has generally required a minimum of 120 man hours prior to the event and a willingness to be on call 12 hours per day (or more) for the first three days of the event.

Disinformation Kiosk
The Disinformation Kiosk Lead has the general responsibility of providing a forum for the community to tell itself what is going on at the event.
Edjumication
The Edumication Lead edumicates newbies about the community's principles. Edumication disseminates information about Leave No Trace, community participation, gift economy, and other "rules of engagement" that are held common by Flipizens and other Burner communities. This Lead helps newbies achieve a more fulfilling Flipside experience, allowing them to integrate fluidly into the existing community.
Email Lists (*)
The Email Lists Lead is responsible for maintaining the various burnaustin.org and burningflipside.com mailing lists. Generally, the Email list lead simply accepts complaints like: "Hey, the server is down" and responds with things like: "Why yes, you're right, it is." and makes the phone calls necessary to get it back online.
Flipside Flame (*)
The Flipside Flame Lead is responsible for soliciting content for, organizing, and publishing the Flipside Flame to the austin-announce list. The Flame ideally should go out once every two or three weeks. The ideal Flipside Flame lead is excited about being a conduit for new event information, is well-organized, is an excellent communicator and solicitor of desired content. The lead should be able to collate the information and have it published in a timely fashion to meet the desired timeline.
Media Liaison (*)
The Media Liaison Lead is the resource and contact for any media source who wants to cover the event. The Media Liaison also organizes the policies by which the participants are allowed to take pictures and shoot videos of their experiences at the event. To be the Media Liaison, you should be a good people person, have an understanding of mass media, and have some knowledge of dealing with the media as a representative of the Flipside organization in case of emergencies.
Sticket Design/Ordering (*)
"Sticket" is a portmanteau of the words "sticker" and "ticket." The Sticket Lead accepts the ticket and sticker submissions, wrangles the selection committees, and orders the final product.
Survival Guide (*)
The Survival Guide Lead is responsible for publishing and distributing the year's survival guide with tickets via mail. The lead should be well-organized and have some knowledge of publishing software.
Telegraph Lead
The Telegraph Lead builds, catalogues and maintains a library of e-mail templates that are regularly or annually dispatched in service of the event or community. The Telegraph Lead also may be called upon to dispatch messages to announce, austin-list, and other appropriate media. This is an experimental position that may last only one year or shorter (from 2009), depending on the evaluation of its usefulness and continued need.
Ticket Distribution (*)
The Ticket Distribution Lead is responsible for being in charge of everything pertaining to the distribution and sale of tickets to the event. This lead is *not* responsible for overseeing the design process (that's the Sticket Design/Ordering lead). This lead is encouraged to recruit some assistants. To fill this position, you should be an organized person who can meet deadlines and doesn’t mind fielding lots and lots of questions.
Web Content
The Website Content Lead is responsible for soliciting, developing, editing and posting content for the burningflipside.com web site. Content typically will be event- or community-oriented in nature, and frequently under the direction of the LLC. Strong spelling and grammar skills are a necessity.
Website Admin (*)
The Website Administration Lead is responsible for the technical operations of the burningflipside.com web site. The Website Admin evaluates and recommends hosting services and technologies to be implemented for the organization's web site. This Lead also installs software, grants administrative access to appropriate individuals, and helps maintain general availability and uptime on the site.

Boundaries and Safety Signage
The Boundaries and Safety Signage Lead is responsible for evaluating the need for, creation of, and execution of a plan utilizing signs to promote safety during the event. This Lead also coordinates the following: placement of boundary tape around the event's perimeter, placement of safety signs at Gate and Greeters, installation of the alphabetical road signs which can be used to navigate the city by emergency crews, and placement of signs that alert participants of safety hazards such as high-density cactus areas, cliff edges, slippery surfaces and other potential hazards that could result in injury.
Fire Safety (*)
The Fire Safety Lead is responsible for organizing what is essentially the Pyropolis Volunteer Fire Department. The PVFD acts as the first-line defense against out-of-control fires, and serves to monitor the effigy burn (and any secondary burns) to ensure that it burns safely. This Lead should have a history of fire fighting with preferably fire management experience.
Meteorology Consultant
On burn night only, the Meteorology Consultant is responsible for collaborating with the LLC, landowner, and Fire Safety team to identify and track any weather that could present a safety hazard to either individuals or property. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, monitoring local weather reports and utilizing any available technology onsite. This Lead should ideally have a some familiarity in interpreting radar and weather patterns.
Pyropolis Emergency Team (PETS) (*)
The PET Lead is a Liability Lead responsible for organizing necessary volunteers and supplies to address, 24 hours a day, any emergency medical situations that might occur over the course of Flipside. The PET Lead should also possess an understanding of associated medical liability issues that may relate to volunteer providers and the event itself.
Rangers (*)
The Rangers Lead is responsible for organizing Ranger operations for the Burning Flipside event season. This Lead should have previous history as a Pyropolis Ranger, preferably as a shift lead. Black Rock City Ranger experience is also a plus, but not required. Many, many people will interact with this lead. This Lead position should have a good knowledge of the Flipside organizational structure, be well organized, a reliable and understanding communicator, and capable of delegating tasks to avoid being overwhelmed with the details of the position. This position is a liability lead and will oftentimes be in high demand.
Safety Lighting
The Safety Lighting Lead is responsible for examining the event site for potential safety problems related to the lay of the land, and formulating and executing a lighting plan to make travel through these areas safer at night. This Lead position requires someone who is organized and willing to spend extra time out at the event site prior to the event to determine safety hazards to pedestrian traffic.
Sanctuary (*)
Sanctuary provides a quiet retreat for those who find themselves mentally and/or emotionally overwhelmed by the Flipside experience. The Sanctuary Lead is a liability lead that is responsible for organizing the sanctuary space at Flipside as well as recruiting, orienting, and scheduling qualified volunteers to provide mental health support during the event. The sanctuary lead should preferably have a background in counseling and/or psychotherapy and should possess excellent psychosocial assessment skills.
Sound (*)
The Sound Lead establishes sound decibel level criteria that meet requirements to minimize sound impact on the neighboring community. This is a liability lead position and requires assembling and training "sound marshals" who monitor and enforce sound policies at the event. Excellent communication skills, organization, and a willingness to formulate and disseminate vital sound information to the Flipside communitiy prior to the event are paramount to this position.

Fuel
The Fuel Lead is responsible for coordinating the fuel needed to power the Motor Pool, infrastructure generators, and other infrastructure fuel ordering needs.
Harbinger
The Harbinger Lead is responsible for organizing a mobile Public Address system for messages that may need to be communicated on-site to the population of Pyropolis. This includes event announcement and on site volunteer recruitment.
Ice (*)
The Ice Lead is responsible for all aspects of planning and executing ice sales at Flipside. This is a liability lead position.
Load In/Out Transpo
The Infrastructure Transpo Lead is responsible for coordinating the loading and transportation of infrastructure items to and from the event site. The Transpo Lead should be organized and committed; the effigy doesn’t get built if it never shows up.
This Lead works with the Site Sign-Off Area and Area Facilitator during event breakdown activities.
Motor Pool
The Motor Pool Lead is responsible for coordinating the rental, delivery, upkeep, return of vehicles used at Flipside for infrastructure purposes. These can be golf carts, Mules, Polaris, Gators, etc..
Porta Potties
The Port-O-Pottie Lead is responsible for coordinating the contract with the Port-o-Pottie vendor regarding delivery, pickup, stocking and servicing of the port-o-potties at Flipside. The ideal lead for this position should be organized, friendly, and willing to put up with a little shit. Just kidding. Kinda.
Power / Electrical
The Power/Electrical Lead is responsible for ensuring safe and reliable power for infrastructure. Infrastructure groups requiring power/electrical needs are the Effigy, PETS, Rangers, Fire Safety, Sanctuary, Ice, Greeters, Safety Lighting, Radio Communications, Parking, the Grove.
Pre / Post Ops
The Pre/Post Ops Lead is responsible for coordinating the volunteer labor pool who will assist with infrastructure setup for Flipside. Unlike the Shaven Apes, Pre/Post Ops deals specifically with helping set up the various pieces of infrastructure such as carports, the radio tower, etc. The Pre/Post Ops Lead should be well organized, a good communicator, have a decent knowledge of the organizational structure, and capable of recruiting a pool of volunteers willing to help out with heavy lifting and other backbreaking, sweaty work. Pre/Post Ops are /not/ simply Flipside's grunt workforce; all Leads should be recruiting their own help. Pre/Post Ops are the heroes who make everything much easier.
This Lead works with the Site Sign-Off Area and Area Facilitator during event breakdown activities.
Print Lead
The Print Lead is responsible for coordinating the printing/laminating/copying that other departments may need prior to the event. This is a new lead position for Flipside 2009. The general idea behind adding this lead is that a lot of different leads need things printed/laminated/copied and that there may be advantages to trying to put this all through one person. Help shape this position into something helpful to all leads.
Radio Communications (*)
The Radio Communications Lead is responsible for organizing the radio system used to connect the various organizations at Flipside. This lead should have a decent knowledge of radio technology and the available systems at Flipside's disposal; in addition the lead should be communicative and well-organized.
Shaven Apes
Shaven Apes are a group that help the community through grunt labor. Helping to set up a tent, build a dome, get a car unstuck, etc. are the type of tasks that the Apes undertake. Apes are informal, in that a participant does not have a "right to Apes", but they can certainly ask. Apes in general do NOT undertake the setting up of infrastructure.
The Shaven Apes Lead is responsible for putting together this team of volunteer labor to help the Flipside community. The ideal person for this position is organized, communicative, and has an understanding of the types of roles they imagine the Shaven Apes to perform.
Towing/DMV/Official Vehicles
The Towing/DMV Lead is responsible for coordinating several aspects of vehicular travel during Flipside, and ensuring the roads remain open and clear of misparked vehicles. It is important that the roads remain clear so that any emergency vehicles can access the event. Other than for loading and unloading purposes, all vehicles must remain parked for the duration of Flipside; the only exceptions include vehicles that have been cleared by DMV for during-event travel. This Lead is responsible for organizing the enforcement of parking and driving policies. This Lead is ideally very organized and a good communicator.

Clean-up Lead
The Site Clean-Up Lead is officially tasked with cleaning up the Burn Scar or, that which is left behind after we burn our Effigy. This includes restoring the Burn Scar to better than how we found it. Recruit people, organize schedules so nobody and only nobody is killed doing it. This lead also functions as the InterZone Signoff Coordinator for the upper field area and organizes with the Grove Host, Rangers and PETs and the large upper-field theme camps ensuring they are clear. The lead is responsible for organizing, recruiting and motivating a volunteer team to assist.
Earth Guardian Lead
The Earth Guardian Lead is responsible for Leave No Trace and Sustainability education and action. This lead is expected to organize, recruit and motivate a teams of volunteers to accomplish three main activities. First and foremost the Earth Guardians will lead by example walking the event site in teams or individually collecting MOOP for proper disposal and discussing the problem of trash small and large. Second, the Earth Guardians educate and discuss the policy of Leave No Trace, what that means and how individuals and camps contribute to the solution and the problem. Third, the Earth Guardians educate regarding Sustainability: reducing packaging, reusing instead of replacing or discarding, recycling discards, energy consumption and planning around using less, using locally, carbon footprint and understanding energy efficiency. While primarily an education role the Earth Guardians are expected to demonstrate a "practice what we preach" leadership in these areas.
InterZone Signoff Lead
This lead organizes the InterZone Signoff process with a team of coordinators. The role of the coordinators is to follow up with camps as they pack up to insure the camps are leaving the site by Monday and that the camp is responsibly managing their trash and moop. Coordinators also document trash and moop problems left by camps for reference in subsequent years when managing camp applications for space. This lead works closely with the City Planning group to communicate with camps prior to the event about expectations and introduce camp leads to their coordinator.

The Volunteer Coordinator lead runs PVC, the Pyropolis Volunteer Conscription Center.
