PoisonIvy

The Final Work Weekend of the season was a rousing success! Downed branches were burned, a multitude of ant mounds were taken out, and more poison ivy than you can shake an itchy stick at was removed. Thanks to everyone who participated in our condensed work weekend schedule!

Last Minute Checklist

Survival Guide

Read it. There will be a quiz. Seriously.
A PDF is available online at http://www.burningflipside.com/sg

A text-only version (good for smartphones) is available at

Ticketing & Gate

Ticketing is all will-call this year. There are a few things you can do to ensure that you zip through formalities at Gate.
Make sure your ticket is in your legal name. Log in here:
http://secure.burningflipside.com/tickets/index.php
If it isn’t, click the edit button (looks like a pencil) and fix it.

If you don’t already have your will-call receipt, download it from the same web address. Click the download button (looks like a cloud with a down-arrow). Print it out and bring it with you to Gate. The gate scanners cannot read phone screens.

If you’re having trouble logging in, try a password reset here:
https://profiles.burningflipside.com/reset.php

Never had an account on our website? Create one here:
https://profiles.burningflipside.com/register.php
And then go through the above process to check your info and download your will-call receipt.

Maps

The theme-camp map is not available as of this writing, but when it is, it will be here:
http://www.burningflipside.com/event/map

Directions to the event site are here:
http://www.burningflipside.com/event/directions

The map may show that you should take FM 908. Don’t! Take FM 486 up to San Gabriel, turn right, and continue for 3.1 miles to County Road 428. If you’ve been going the past couple of years and got held up at the bridge that was down to one lane while it was being repaired, you’ll be happy to learn that construction is finished.

Fundraisers

Fire & Ice

Fire-Ice-fund

Help bring us bring ice and pizza to Flipside. This year we will teach a class on how to sculpt and we are bringing more pizzas then we have ever done in the past. Helping fund our art will help teach our community a little more about bringing the whimsy to Flipside. 🙂 <3 Fire and Ice Camp

Boombox Cartel

We plan to bring our boombox fueled, grass roots, neon Party Safari to Flipside this year! The catch? Batteries are expensive. Very expensive. We have enough batteries on hand to cover most of the Flipside event, up until Burn Night, but it would be very nice to put a fresh set of batteries into all the boomboxes for our planned flashmob dance party after the burn.
Why do we need boomboxes after the Effigy burn? Well, just imagine everyone on the burn field dancing to the same beat, and wandering all over the Flipside site in one massive boombox fueled mob while we’re doing it. Donate today!

Recycling

recycling Hours:
Saturday 10 am-6 pm
Sunday 10 am-6 pm
Monday 9 am- 5 pm
Earlier this year, people said they loved recycling and wanted it to be present at Burning Flipside. Now is the time to put those words to the test.

Recycling is looking for extra help Monday and/or Tuesday, even if only for a short time. Monday shifts, to load the truck Monday and Tuesday, and then unload the truck Tuesday. Please stop in and show how important this is you so we know recycling should be present in 2016. Anyone who volunteers for a Monday shift can stay on the land until Tuesday morning; volunteers helping to load the truck and unload the truck will need to stay over night, If there not enough volunteers for the Monday shift, and we get swamped, we will have to shutdown early! So please, plan ahead for your recycling needs.

Leave No Trace

Our Leave No Trace team is looking for a few good Flipizens to participate and help return our Pecan Playa to its natural state of bucolic beauty! Join the Clean-Up Crew on Tuesday, May 26th and/or Saturday May 30th to be a part of one of the most glorious demonstrations of our communal culture: We collaborate to build a kaleidoscopic mandala and then ensure that it’s as if nothing happened! It’s my job to make sure y’all are as comfortable as possible during our workdays, so trust that all y’all need to bring is hydration and your awesome self! the sign-up list and more details can be found on the Clean-Up Volunteering page: http://wiki.burningflipside.com/wiki/Clean_up
Or just email me, The Clean-Up Lead, and we can discuss our passion for LNT: cleanup15@burningflipside.com

So you want to be a Ranger?

burn-night-crew-2014Yay!! Come volunteer with us! Gizmo, your friendly neighborhood Flipside Ranger here and we need all the help we can get folks. Ranger shifts are a mere six hours! Helpful qualities include a sense of humor, flexibility, integrity, patience, empathy, focus, and an unwavering commitment to the event and the participants who make it happen. If you have a willingness to be a responsible adult for brief periods in our fair city of Pyropolis and want to look fabulous in khaki while doing so, you’re in the right place!

You might say, “Gizmo, there aren’t any more trainings, ZOMG what are we going to do!?” Never fear! We will have our very last training ON SITE Thursday evening. Shift Lead training 6-7PM and Dirt Rangers 7-9PM. Report to Safety HQ 15 minutes early and we’ll get you trained!

Some key gaps in our schedule include BURN PERIMETER. Best seat in the house folks and one of the most fun shifts worked every year! We are also in need on Sunday Swing shift (during the burn) Sunday from 8p-2a and Grave from 2a-8a. We are nearly empty on Monday. Any shift worked on Monday will earn you our eternal gratitude and possibly some extra schwag.

Guardians

Wanna be even more badass? Come be a Guardian and help protect the people of Flipside!

Looking to volunteer somewhere low-key and fun? Wanna learn how to use night vision and infrared lights? Need a little quiet space away from the city for a bit? Well the Guardians Department is the place for you. We are still in need of some badass volunteers. Spook shifts are only 4 hours, and you’re welcome to bring a friend with as long as they’re sober and won’t interfere with your shift. Digital and Guardian of the Day shifts are a bit longer, but still just as fun. All volunteers will receive super cool stickers, and if ya work a burn night shift or at least two shifts you get a Guardians t-shirt. Come help keep Flipside safe! Contact me at guardians15@burningflipside.com for more information.

Clean Up/Post Ops Needs Help Saturday, May 30th

At the end of Burning Flipside there is a whole bunch of stuff that needs to go back to the warehouse so it can be used next year. Also the beautiful pecan orchard we currently are residing at needs to be swept for any last minute MOOP. These two actions help keep Burning Flipside sustainable (and able to have a 2016).
This can’t happen without you. Please come back out to Pyropolis Saturday May 30th at 10am to do a quick couple hours sweep of the lands. Lunch will be provided. IF you can’t come out then please make yourself available to help unload some items at the warehouse Saturday afternoon.

exodusExodus

Want to get your inner badger on? The Exodus Badgers would love for you to help out Monday in helping our participants head back to the default world.
There are both Morning and Afternoon shifts (times dependent on weather, but generally 9 and noon) for your convenience and all Badgers have the added benefit of not having to rush out Monday after undoubtedly enjoying themselves too much on Burn Night. Ride a cart and watch the city deconstruct itself!
If interested, contact wrinn1@gmail.com or on-site (typically he can be found lingering around RedCamp.

I go searching through Flipizens, and wading through the bitchin
Looking all in vain
And my eyes are a’ bleedin while
I really should be readin
If I only had a Flame.

I’d locate every party, for all the good and naughty
In dry times and in rain
With the Grog I’ll be drinkin’
If the efffigy’s not sinkin’
Think I’ll go and read a Flame

Oh, I could tell you why there’s leeches near the shore
I could drink some things I never drunk before
And then I’d sit, and drink some more.

I would not be just a nuffin’ my head all full of stuffin’
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry, life would be a ding-a-derry,
If I only had a Flame.

Congratulations, you made it to the end!

April Showers Bring May Flames (2015 Vol 3)

FBSLogo

April has brought its fair share of content to present, so strap yourself in and forge ahead! I’ve added a Table of Contents, because this is a rather large Flame… Feel free to jump around, but please take the time to read the whole thing.

Remember, if you have things you’d like to contribute to the Flame, please check out the Flipside Flame/Announce Submission form. You can find it under “Contact” on the home page of burningflipside.com. There is only one more planned Flipside Flame before Burning Flipside 2015: The Wizards of Odd. Let’s get to it!

Get Involved

DaFT participation invite to community: make art!

WizHowdy from your friends in DaFT 2015! This is a call/invitation to all interested parties (individuals, theme camps, volunteer groups, families, etc.) wishing to CONTRIBUTE ART to the community effigy. CHEERS FOR ART!!!

The Wizard FEG is zooming right along! Please ADD your ODD to the wizard by creating 2 1/2′ x 2 1/2′ fabric patches to be attached to the Wizard’s hat. Camp logos, whatever, etc., due back to DAFT by May Day (that’s May 1.) Drop it off at the wherehouse on any Church Nite or ping onemarva@yahoo.com. We can’t wait to see your special, magic touch!

Zone Czars

czar_gdorange_toptubeZone “Greeter” was too confusing so we asked the community what a suitable replacement was, and after wading through the submissions there was a clear winner. Welcome to our new name!! It has a nice ring to it huh? Zone Czars. Yeah…

On to the real news of the day. You spoke, and we listened. Wednesday and Friday (when very few cars are coming in) can be exceptionally boring either hanging out by yourself waiting for a car to come, or insane running around trying to catch everyone by yourself, so we are trying something new: BIKES! Yes, if you sign up for a Wednesday (there are only a couple left, so I may close this one down quickly) or Late Friday shift there will be bikes and we will be a mobile crew. If this is not something you are up for, you can still sign up for a Thursday or Friday morning shift and we will run status quo (a group of 3-4 folks per zone ready for cars to come in.)

Sign Up Now! Welcome to 2015 Zone! EXCITED!!!!

Combustion Chamber

The Combustion Chamber is an advisory committee to the Austin Artistic Reconstruction LLC to facilitate community input & transparency for the policy-making process and organization of burn community events. There will is one more meeting in April, and only one in May before Burning Flipside 2015, each starting at 7:42 pm at the Warehouse. Special topics are as follows:

April 20:

  • Warehouse – AAR will give a State of the Warehouse update.
  • Theme Camp Leads Mixer topics – The fabulous Emily Sparkles has asked if there are any topics that the CC feels it might be beneficial for theme camp leads to discuss at their upcoming mixer.
  • CC retreat – Does the CC feel that a retreat would be beneficial? If so, when & where should this event occur?

May 4:

  • Volunteering – General State of the Volunteers address. Are there volunteer needs in any departments? How can we sufficiently support those gaps? How can the organization as a whole encourage more volunteering?
  • Burner Arts Fest similar to EAST – Does the community want this? Who is willing to work on the team to make it happen? Is there a budget or is the a contribution-only festival? If there is a budget, from whom or where do those monies come?

Work Weekends

Neither Hell nor High Water happened, and the Third (yet First) Work Weekend went on as planned! Poison Ivy was pulled (but there’s always more, so don’t get complacent), broken limbs were downed, downed limbs were burned, brisket was cooked and consumed, and while a lot got done, there’s plenty more to do!

The final Work Weekend of this season is May 1-3. If you’re coming, please email wwcomm15@burningflipside.com, or sign up on the Work Weekend wiki.

Help / Store / Accept THE HIVE

You know it and love it: The Hive.

hive-logoThis beautifully designed, expansive structure has been at Flipside for the last 3 years, and now The Hive needs an ongoing, committed group of people to bring it back to Flipside this year. It also needs a new storage location. So………

  1. If we can get a critical mass to join the Hive crew, we can keep it going.
  2. If anyone can provide a storage location, please get in touch.
  3. If a theme camp wants to take it over and make it their own, we are open to gifting The Hive to a major theme camp. You provide a dedicated team to assist with load-out of the structure from its current location in Driftwood and on site at Flipside for build and break-down, so you can manage it in the future on your own. In return, your camp would receive all the infrastructure (valued at $12,000) and the expertise to bring your camp to a new level. We’ll provide a small team on-site to help put it up and tear it down, and pass on our knowledge to you.

After Flipside 2015, transport, storage and maintenance is your responsibility. Interested? Email a proposal to runsarisk@gmail.com.

Culture

Why You Shouldn’t Wear A Headdress At Flipside

by Kit O’Connell

TLDR: You shouldn’t wear an Indian headdress at Burning Flipside because it’s not your right to wear one. The headdress is a special ritual garment only worn by Plains Indian tribes members who have earned their headdress and were ritually awarded the right to wear it by the leaders of their nation.

You may have seen people wearing these headdresses at other events, like music festivals. Members of the tribes that make the real thing have asked us very nicely to stop. So we should.

If you’d like more information, please continue reading. Also, if you plan to argue with me, please read on so at least you know what you’re talking about.

What is a headdress?

The wearing of feathers and warbonnets in Native communities is not a fashion choice. Eagle feathers are presented as symbols of honor and respect and have to be earned. Some communities give them to children when they become adults through special ceremonies, others present the feathers as a way of commemorating an act or event of deep significance. —Adrienne K, “But Why Can’t I Wear A Hipster Headdress?

The idea of a soldier earning medals for acts of valor is similar to the meaning of the feathers on a headdress, but with an added spiritual and religious significance. Further, headdresses are never given to non-natives — in fact, they aren’t given to men who aren’t members of specific Plains Indian tribes where the headdress is traditional, or even to every member of that tribe.

You may have visited a Native American gift store or art vendor who sells specially made artifacts, designed to be bought by tourists and other non-natives. Just like souvenirs you bought in other places, these are specifically made for you to buy and display or enjoy later. A true Plains Indian headdress is never sold in this way.

Why shouldn’t you wear one?

“As wearing a headdress reinforces stereotypes about Native people and appropriates our culture with little or no regard for our traditions, I think it is egregious and contributes to the dehumanization of our people.” — Jacqueline Keeler, founder of EONM (Eradicating Offensive Native Mascotry)

“The headdress is reserved for our revered elders who, through their selflessness and leadership, have earned the right to wear one. It’s a spiritual garb, not just cultural; it’s not merely an addition to one’s attire. Wearing one, even an imitation headdress, belittles what our elders have spent a lifetime to earn.” — Simon Moya-Smith, citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation and journalist

Quoted from Brenna Ehrlich, “Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Wear A Native American Headdress

Because of the stereotypes associated with the headdress (remember the Indians in Disney’s “Peter Pan”?), non-natives wearing headdresses is a similar racist practice to wearing black face. Whatever your intentions are in wearing that headdress, other people will perceive it as an offensive roleplaying of another race.

Some people argue that they wear the headdress out of respect, not as a fashion prop. Lighting In A Bottle is a Burning Man-inspired event that happens over Memorial Day Weekend in California, and they’ve added a special section to their survival guide asking participants not to wear headdresses. They point out that there are better ways to show respect:

Sporting that headdress or other imitation accessories that were not received through cultural rights or permission and the understanding that comes with it, means being a walking representative of 500+ years of colonialism and racism.

We embrace raw, creative, and authentic self-expression. But by embracing the current tribal trends you aren’t asserting yourself as an individual, you are situating yourself comfortably amongst a culture of power that continues to oppress Native peoples.

TAKING OFF THE HEADDRESS IS ABOUT RESPECTING THE REALITIES FACED BY NATIVE PEOPLES TODAY.

Although the land where we celebrate Burning Flipside is private property today, Apache Pass and its waterway were used by people indigenous to the region for thousands of years before we arrived. Show some respect to their legacy — and the struggles their descendants face today — and find another way to decorate your head.

Besides, the headdress sheds and creates piles of MOOP (matter out of place, garbage). A lover and I once spent hours following a trail of feathers left behind by a headdress through Pyropolis, until we’d filled an entire HEB plastic grocery bag (remember those?).

What if you decide to wear one anyway?
Yes, some people will mock these symbols.  However in order to do this, they have to understand what the symbols represent, and then purposefully desecrate or alter them in order to make a statement. They cannot then claim to be honouring the symbol. –âpihtawikosisân, “An Open Letter to Non-Natives in Headdresses

I’ve been attending Flipside for 15 years now, and I know that at its heart, it’s impossible to tell people what to do — anywhere, really, but especially in our community.

Some people will choose to wear headdresses anyway — because they have their reasons for disagreeing with me and the Native peoples I’ve quoted above. Or even out of deliberate flaunting of taboo.

That’s your right. Our community prides itself on radical self-expression. No one’s going to kick you out of the event for doing so.

But, “we welcome the stranger” — we also pride ourselves on being an open and accepting community. Wearing a headdress might be interpreted as insensitive, and some people will certainly consider it racist. Do you want to be the Burner who makes a Plains Indian feel unwelcome at our event because of your insensitivity?

Maybe you don’t care. Your headdress is MOOPy and leaves bits of feathers everywhere, but maybe Leave No Trace doesn’t matter to you, or (hopefully) you’re planning to spend extra hours picking up after yourself.

But at least, having read this article, you’ll know what that headdress actually means.

Fundraisers

If your camp is having a fundraiser, we want to let people know about it. We’re not talking about vending, just good old fashioned fundraising for camp needs. Yes, you can make that event on the book of faces, but we’d love to hear about what you’re doing and help you get the word out! Use the Flipside Flame/Announce Submission form to send me details.

TinderBox Update

The art jury has made their selections, and TinderBox art grants have been selected. Come out on this beautiful Spring day to buy the odd and ends that you didn’t know you needed.  Updates later with specific items, but there will be clothes, electronics, small furniture and various home decor. Proceeds will support Serious Camp’s Flipside 2015 endeavors, including an Apothecary addition to The Sweet Shop and the Theme Camp Leads Appreciation Mixer. Help the Serious Bunnies make your Flipside AMAZING!
Saturday April 18 from 7AM to Noon at 4915 Avenue G Austin, Texas 78751
  • Tortuga is having a fundraiser garage sale:
Saturday April 25 and Sunday April 26th at 13008 Hunters Chase, Austin, Texas 78729
  • Mecha-Gator Storms Pyropolis!
Help Mecha-Gator come back to the pecan playa. It’s already built, so it just needs a little love for transportation and fuel.
  • Spindra, Momma Spider
Spindra, Momma Spider is a 10 foot tall steel spider, created by SoS and Fireball and friends  to play with. Her sparkly bouncing eggs are stuffed into her belly and  need your help to be turned. Yup that’s right – she’s interactive!!! Step right up and give that big old belly a turn to light up your eyes and heat up the night. She’s going to be near the Fire and Ice Camp so come visit her there.

Community Contributions

Sometimes, we get contributions from the community, and this is a way to showcase the art of language. This kind of gift is perhaps best given before the event, where we can take time to savor the words. This is just another form of art, so please accept it as such!

Angel of Nudity

© Dirac 2015

I saw her at FreezOrBurn, a few years ago, when it was still at Rec Plant. I had just woken up on the last day, so I was contemplating the tasks ahead of me to depart. I had slept well, in a heated trailer, and I was still in the sweatsuit that I had slept in. I decided that I would keep these clothes on for now, then shower when I got home.

I saw her as I came out of the bathroom. She was nude, crouching over a campfire, frying bacon in a skillet on the open flame. She was a vision of loveliness. She had a nice body, a little skinny perhaps, but young and beautiful. I thought she looked vulnerable, unprotected against the spattering and popping of the bacon fat. I approached, remembering that it is always good luck to smile and say hi to a pretty woman, and more so when she is so obviously comfortable in her skin.

“I guess you beat me to it,” I said, “I’m usually the first one nude around here.”
“Oh no,” she replied, “I’m always the first person nude among my friends.”
I could not refute her. I realized I was not really qualified to talk about how often I am nude, while I am clothed and she is nude.

“I’m a little lazy to get cleaned up,” I said, making some attempt to excuse my clothiness.
“Yeah, I’m lazy too,” she said, “but it’s worth it because it feels so good to have the sun and the breeze on my skin.”

Of course she was right, I knew she was right. I have said most of those words myself! Instantly I knew I must shower and go sky clad. I don’t know if it was my pride that demanded it, but I felt a little shown up, when this little wisp of a girl, who has barely been alive as long as I have been nudist, is telling me why to go nude.

After I was showered and shaved, and wearing my usual protective gear of socks, shoes, and visor, I went back to that campfire. She was not there. Apparently it wasn’t her camp, she was just using the fire for cooking. My impulse was to go seek her out, to thank her for what she did for me. And also it’s still a good idea to chat up a pretty nude woman. But I stopped.

I came to see that this was one of those burner type encounters, unforgettable, transformative, but over. She had given me the gift of nudity. Not just her nudity, which was a significant gift by itself, but my nudity, even better.
Even though I don’t know her, I will always remember my angel of nudity.

The Flipside Flame March(es) On! (2015 Vol 2)

FBSLogo

It’s March! Time for more information about all the stuff and things relating to Burning Flipside 2015: The Wizards of Odd! Remember, if you have things you’d like to contribute to the Flame, please check out the Flipside Flame/Announce Submission form. You can find it under “Contact” on the home page of burningflipside.com.

Bonus Round Tickets

Hi Flipizens,

After our announcement that we did not meet our capacity at ticket opening, we’ve received LOTS of emails from people about how they can get in on a hypothetical “second round.”

Unfortunately, the ticket window is closed, so please don’t contact the ticket team about these hypothetical tickets and please don’t send in a money order or any additional ticket requests at this time. Please only contact the ticket team if you submitted your ticket request during the normal window and are having an issue. We’ll announce new opportunities to buy tickets as they come up.

We’ve always said that volunteering for DaFT, kicking ass at Work Weekends or volunteering in other ways, building art, checking in with your theme camp, coming out to church night, and in general participating is always the best way to get a ticket. We’re putting our tickets where our metaphorical mouths are now. Expect to see us at Church Night looking at who’s working on awesome art projects and speaking with our leads to put some of those tickets in the hands of people who are stepping up.

Whatever you do, DON’T PANIC.

We’ve already distributed some at the Houston Road Show and the North Texas Road Show and we will announce any opportunities that come available on official channels like the Flipside Flame, the official mailing lists, the official twitter page, etc. Maybe on just one of them, just because.

You might think that this kind of sounds a little like a pain in the ass.

And it is!

Let me esplain. No, let me sum up.

Our normal mail-in ticket process is partially in place to make ticket sales easier on our entirely volunteer run event, so when participants wait until after the ticket window to get their money together, they’re making it harder on the volunteers. Ideally, Austin Artistic Reconstruction won’t sell any tickets outside of the mail in window, and we just might not in the future, so next year be sure to follow directions, and get your ticket requests in on time.

So, if/when we sell additional tickets, we’ll probably have a few hoops for you to jump through and if you want tickets, keep watching, keep listening, keep participating. (And register on the website so you can get them easier!)

Thanks,
Austin Artistic Reconstruction

Ticket Opening Rundown

Hello Flipizens from Loribug the Ticket Lead.
The Ticket Window is CLOSED! Please stop sending in Ticket Registrations – they will not be accepted. The official ticket window was January 7 to January 22, 2015.

The Ticket Team processed over 3,400 tickets and accepted almost all of them. I personally researched all the returns.

The reasons for return this year:
• Late Postmark
• Personal Check
• Underpayment
• No Money Order Included
• Late Postmark AND Underpayment
• Late Postmark AND Personal Check
• The person who sent in a 1 cent Money Order

Impressions from Ticket Opening

  1. You guys are AMAZING – decorated envelopes were awesome – but some had problems going through the post office.
  2. Check your postage! Extra weight = extra postage. Inadequate postage can get your envelope returned to you from the post office.
  3. Smart Moves: Some of the more extravagantly decorated envelopes (think stickers, ribbons, dangling bits, etc) were mailed INSIDE of a second pre-paid USPS envelope. It costs a bit more, but makes it easier for the Post Office to read the address. I think those envelopes are even trackable. TRACKING IS GOOD when it comes to the post office.
  4. If you are getting really close to the deadline, make sure you get your envelope hand stamped.
  5. Don’t send personal checks! Don’t sent cash! If you include additional funds, tell us what they are for! If we do not get explicit instructions, we may have to refund the whole ticket registration. 🙁
  6. Contact the ticket team when you have problems. Really! We helped a lot of people before, during, and after the ticket window.

Most Sincerely, Loribug, Pterrifying Pterodactyl of Ptickets for P2015

Survival Guide is LIVE

Everyone who sent in a ticket request for Burning Flipside should be receiving a printed survival guide in the mail, but for now, you can regard it in all its electronic glory online at http://burningflipside.com/sg — it’s been extensively reorganized and looks great. And pay special attention to the Plan Ahead section while there’s still plenty of time to, well, plan ahead.

Town Hall Road Show Wrap-up

NTXRoadShow15

North Texas

Thank you, Houston and North Texas for making the Road Shows great! We had fantastic turnout at both events, with lots of excited participants ready to learn more about what to expect from The Wizards of Odd.  There were small and lively batches of ticket sales at each event. Many thanks to our gracious hosts: Last Concert Cafe in Houston and Emily Rodriguez Simpson in Dallas. We were grateful to have good enough weather for both events to be outdoors, even if there was still snow (!!!) on the ground up in the Dallas area.

Burning Flipside wants your pictures

Have you ever looked at the burningflipside.com website and thought that it seems kind of…plain? Especially considering we’re a community of artists?

We’re trying to fix that. If you would like to contribute photographs or other digital media that would appear on the website and in other official Flipside communications, you are invited to submit it via the form at

http://www.burningflipside.com/contact/media-contribution

There’s a media-use agreement there that will govern Burning Flipside’s use of your work. It’s short and in plain English.

Work Weekend II Update!bwWW

WORK WEEKEND II IS CANCELLED. Next Work weekend scheduled: March 20-22.
Come for a few hours, or stay for the weekend and help us lay the foundation for Pyropolis by trimming limbs, clearing trails and getting rid of poison ivy and fire ants—among other things. If you’re coming, please email wwcomm15@burningflipside.com, or sign up on the Work Weekend wiki.

The next work weekends are April 10-12, and May 1-3.

Greeters

GreetersPatch
Do you like to hug people?
Do you wish more people read the survival guide?
Are you a fan of the Socratic Method?

If any of the above are true, then you should volunteer with Greeters this year. Greeters are the front line of edjumication, selfreliance, and most importantly, inclusion. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or wideeyed first timer, there’s a place for you to volunteer at Greeters! We have fun, but we also provide a necessary and mandatory service for the city if we aren’t staffed, then the gate cannot open!

We need around 150 volunteers throughout the event to keep Greeters going. If you’re with a Theme Camp we’d love to have your camp adopt a whole shift. If you don’t have a theme camp, feel free to put your name in any open slot. At the end of the shift, you will have a dozen or so new friends! If you have the time and energy, sign up for several shifts!

The Greeters volunteer wiki is open and ready for you to choose a shift. Sign Up!

If you have any questions, feel free to email JulieSchmooly at greeters15@burningflipside.com.

Thank you so much for volunteering!!!!

Shaven Apes: Kanihepya?

Shaven Apes is an all volunteer department that can help with things like Theme Camp setup, Art installations, to building your shade structure, and will even helping you pitch your tent, provide transportation or just help you drink your booze.

Shaven Apes will be wearing a bright, banana yellow, easy to spot t-shirts with the word KANIHEPYA on it. If you can’t find one of us, find someone with a radio and have them ask for one (fyi, folks driving carts usually have a radio).

Do you already know that your theme camp is going to need assistance? There is a wiki page for this.

Please understand that Shaven Apes is a small team of volunteers and we’re not equipped to lend DaFT-sized amounts of help.

Like helping people build things? Sign up to be an Ape! Shaven Apes wouldn’t exist without volunteers. Please consider volunteering some of your time, it’s a great way to improve your karma. You can sign up for a shift on the wiki.

If you are interested in volunteering, but don’t yet know what your schedule will be like, sign up to be on the mailing list, we will not spam you with a bunch of messages.

If you have issues with any of these links, you can email the Top Banana (Fractallia) directly at apes15@burningflipside.com.

Combustion Chamber

The Combustion Chamber is an advisory committee to the Austin Artistic Reconstruction LLC to facilitate community input & transparency for the policy-making process and organization of burn community events. There will is one more meeting in March, and two in April, each starting at 7:42 pm at the Flipside Warehouse. Special topics are as follows:
March 23:
– Recycling
Revisiting the recycling topic: Though having recycling available at Flipside impacts our individual self-reliance and consumes some resources, the community has felt that offering this was more of a benefit than a detractor from the event. The CC and our amazing Site Sign-Off crew want your input. Also, are there specific things you feel should or should not be recycled?

– Flipside without a Burn
What factors could prohibit burning of the effigy, arising either prior to
or at the event? Are we at risk of a no-burn this year? If Flipside
burns were prohibited for several years, what would that mean to the
event?

April 6:
– Cultural appropriation
April 20:
– Warehouse
– CC Retreat

Do we want this, and when/where

Fundraisers

If your camp is having a fundraiser, we want to let people know about it. We’re not talking about vending, just good old fashioned fundraising for camp needs. Yes, you can make that event on the book of faces, but we’d love to hear about what you’re doing and help you get the word out!

Seriously Sexy Flipside Countdown Calendar: Bunnies in Spaaaace edition

Serious

Serious Camp is now seeking donations for the Seriously Sexy Flipside Countdown Calendar: Bunnies in Spaaaaace! edition.

The Seriously Sexy Flipside Countdown Calendar will run June 2015 to May 2016 to help you countdown to next year’s Burning Flipside event. Featuring 12 months of the sultry Serious Camp bunnies exploring the far depths of space, the calendar will also contain dates for many of your favorite regional burn events. You can even choose to add your own event(s) to the calendar!

In addition to funding the creation of the calendar itself, your donation will help Serious Camp make improvements to The Sweet Shop and host another kick ass Theme Camp Leads Appreciation Mixer celebrating Theme Camp leads at Flipside.

Road Shows (Houston & North Texas)

Roads Shows are when a bunch of folks get together and drive off to the farther flung regions of the state and host smaller versions of the Spring Town Hall for the people who can’t make it to Austin’s version.
We’ll be hitting the road on March 1 for the Houston Road Show (Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance St, Houston, TX).
The North Texas Road Show is still in the planning stages, but as soon as we have the details nailed down, we’ll update the post.

Theme Camp Registration

SOOOOOOOOOON

Theme Camp Registration is not open quite yet, but will be coming soon. Keep an eye on the Theme Camp page for more details as they are available.

Art Registration

Also SOOOOOOOOOOOON...

Want to make ART? Art that burns? Check out the Art Registration page for details about Art Registration (which is coming soon) and some great pointers about burning your creations.

DaFT

The Effigy means many things to many people, but to the Design and Fabrication Team (DaFT), it means “If you build it, it will burn!” If you’re interested in learning more, check out Spring Town Hall and Church Nights for people in the know.

CC Meetings

The Combustion Chamber is an advisory committee to the Austin Artistic Reconstruction LLC to facilitate community input & transparency for the policy-making process and organization of burn community events. There will be two meetings in March, each starting at 7:42 pm at the Flipside Warehouse.
The CC will inform the community of any location changes or topic changes as quickly as possible. Please join us at the Warehouse or send us your input at cc@burningflipside.com.

March 9, 2015:
Arts Fest similar to EAST
We had wanted to wait until we knew more about the state of our current Warehouse for this, so we’ll be restarting the discussion regarding: Do we want this? Who works on the team to make it happen? Is there a budget, who/where does it come from?

CC term limits
Doug Notfunnyatall will be proposing a plan for terms limits for serving
on the Combustion Chamber to insure active participation without
stagnation while honoring a limited volunteer pool and the importance of
seasoned experience.  Issues of implementation and addressing exceptions
will also be addressed.

March 23, 2015:
Recycling
Revisiting the recycling topic: Though having recycling available at Flipside impacts our individual self-reliance and consumes some resources, the community has felt that offering this was more of a benefit than a detractor from the event. The CC and our amazing Site Sign-Off crew want your input. Also, are there specific things you feel should or should not be recycled?

Flipside without a Burn
What factors could prohibit burning of the effigy, arising either prior to
or at the event?  Are we at risk of a no-burn this year?  If Flipside
burns were prohibited for several years, what would that mean to the
event?

Church Nights at the Warehouse

Church Night is a weekly gathering to work on projects large and small, and to socialize. Church Nights are every Wednesday (more or less) starting around 7:30 at the Warehouse. Church Nights are Leave No Trace events!

Final Flame of 2014!

FBSLogo

Flipside Flame 2014, Vol 9

Just when I got used to writing Burning Flipside 2014

Burning Flipside 2015: The Wizards of Odd is gearing up, even in the midst of holiday season. The Leads have already started meeting to figure out if we’re all on the same page (or even using paper), and the Combustion Chamber is deep in discussions about the nitty gritty details (you should really go to some of these CC meetings, folks. They’re chock full of fun info!).

Stick around as your friendly neighborhood Content Lead figures out how to work this new format.

If you have articles you’d like to submit for consideration use the Flipside Flint Submission Form. It will be WAY easier than trying to get people’s attention on Facebook…

Your 2015 Waivers will be due soon.
HxLmP[1]
Every calendar year, you must sign a new waiver when you visit the Wherehouse. You’ll sign another one if you go out to Work Weekends (you should totally go, BTW), and another set when you get to Gate at Pyropolis. Don’t fight it. Just embrace the waivers and sign, or this kitten will maul you.

Spring Town Hall is February 21st!

Come to the Wherehouse and learn more about all sorts of stuff. Find a theme camp to join. If you’re in a theme camp, bring information about your camp. More details will be forthcoming, but maybe you should go ahead and block the time on your calendar, because it will be awesome.

Social Media Outlets

You can find Burning Flipside on Twitter, Facebook, and right here on burningflipside.com. There are several unofficial Facebook spaces for fellow Flipizens to hang out, but for official info, be sure to “like” the official page.

STICKET DESIGN CONTEST

Hey Flipizens!

Would you like two free tickets to Burning Flipside 2015: The Wizards of Odd?

And did you know that designing the ticket or the sticker is actually the only way to get TWO free tickets to Flipside?!? Leads, volunteers, even LLC members, pay for their tickets.

Design the Flipside ticket or sticker and submit your design today! The person who submits the winning STICKER design will get TWO free tickets to Flipside 2015. The person who submits the winning TICKET design will also receive TWO free tickets to Flipside 2015.

IMPORTANT NOTE THIS YEAR: Keep in mind that all designs must be original. No clip art, and positively no copywritten material may be used. The designs can be created digitally or by hand.

So break out your pen, marker, crayon or stylus and get the ideas flowing. Hand-drawn submissions are perfectly fine, but must be delivered before the deadline: 10 pm Friday January 30, 2015.

Submit your designs or any questions to Rufus at

STickets15@BurningFlipside.com

We will positively confirm every submission we receive, so if you do not receive a confirmation within a few days, please email us back, and we will confirm receipt.

Burning Flipside will do its best to include all submitted designs, in some form of hype, the survival guide, or the website, so your art should get seen. When you submit you are implicitly giving permission for us to use your design(s) on the ticket or sticker, on the Burning Flipside website, or in the Survival Guide. If for some reason you do not want to give this permission, please specify that when you submit. Also please indicate how you would like your art to be credited.

======
TICKET Design Details:
======

Please include the following information within your Ticket design:

Burning Flipside

The Wizards of Odd

May 21-25, 2015

www.burningflipside.com

Please do not post or display your ticket design anywhere else until after the contest ends. (The artist for the winning ticket design will be asked to refrain from posting it anywhere until after the event.)

  • Artwork should be 2.375 x 4.375 inches.
  • 1/8 inch all around WILL BE CUT OFF creating a final size of 2.125 x 4.125 – this extra space is called bleed.
  • Artwork should be CMYK.
  • Artwork should be supplied at 100% as either vector based art (illustrator or freehand) or at 300dpi if it is a Photoshop file.
  • If Photoshop – .tif, .eps, .psd and .jpeg files are preferred. Please save jpeg files with “maximum quality”.

Tips for successful reproduction of your design:

  • Do not place text too close to the edge of your design. It should be 1/8″ in on either side once the artwork is trimmed. Pick fonts that will be easy to read and try to not use a font that is really thin on a dark background. It will “plug-up” and be hard to read.
  • Do not get too complex, it is often easier to create artwork at a larger size and reduce it down. Keep in mind what it will look like at the smaller size.
  • If you create your art in layers, be sure and save that layered file just in case the printer needs anything altered — this will make it easier on them and you.

=======
STICKER Design Details:
=======

Please include at least the following information within your Sticker design:

Flipside 2015

  • Sticker Art should cover a 2.5″ circle at 300dpi.
  • Make your design simple! Intricate and super-fine lines (less than 1-pt) tend to dry up in the screen and will not show up on the sticker. For your reference, 1pt lines are roughly the same size as what a medium ball point pen will draw. It is a good idea to keep important elements of your artwork at least 1/8″ from the edge of the sticker to allow for cutting. Serifed fonts can be a nightmare — especially at small point sizes. Set all type to at LEAST 10 points.
  • In the past we’ve only printed black and white stickers. Grayscale or gradients are a real pain and don’t print very well, so try to stick to solid colors. If you want to submit a two or three color image, that’s fine and it will be reviewed, but (depending on cost) it may end up being converted to black and white. All halftones are screened at 55 lpi.

We look forward to seeing the designs as they come in. It is an incredible outpouring from this intensively creative community! It’s a pleasure to serve as your sticket team.

If you have any questions, just let us know.

Love,

Your Flipside 2015 Sticker/Ticket Selection Team,

Rufus + SuzyQ
